As a poll worker I really wish someone would educate the populace about how the polls work and how it is virtually impossible for fraud. Certainly to the extent to change an election. I had 1,037 voters yesterday with a two page ballot. Long but exciting day. We balanced after two hours. It. Is so wrong what they are saying about the election.

Agreed. I can't work the polls this year as I fell and fractured my ankle so I'm a bit immobile this go-around. But we would stay and reconcile the # of votes submitted with the # of people that voted before we could go home for the evening. There's little (to no) chance of fraud (at least in the Commonwealth of Virginia).

I couldn't agree more. I've worked several elections over the last 30 years and have discovered that the SYSTEM WORKS!

Not sure if this is a question or just a comment/gripe. The states who are swing are having non stop rallies. Those of us who live in any other state (Florida here) are ignored. Might this have anything to do with polling recently? The luster has worn off because we are ignored.

Also, why does the media continue to ignore the seriously dangerous comments of Trump. I looked at The NY Times, Wapo, CNN, Fox and Politico and did not see anyone with a headline about Trump admiring Hitler. I am sure many don’t even know about these comments. Why does the press just ignore?

Do enough Americans have enough civic education, historical knowledge and political awareness to understand the implications of fascism and what it really means for this country?

Robert’s question is fascinating. Do Americans know how someone gets to be President?

Herein lies the quandary… many folks that don’t understand the electoral college are most likely not following this sub so if Chris provides a discussion..explanation.. it may be lost to the intended audience.

HOWEVER, it may also be one of those questions that we don’t understand, but may be too embarrassed to admit.. and maybe Chris wont want to appear to condescend.

With that said.. yes.. Chris, please explain. I, for one, would enjoy hearing your discussion.

I’m thinking the larger question of is there some type of source that will tell us if Americans know whether Senators represent everyone in a State and Representatives are elected only by a portion of the people in that State?

What will happen if Trump is elected and attempts to impose marshal law and arrest all his enemies with the support of the House Republicans, if not a Republican Senate?

Do you think economics/business reporting is sufficient at major political news organizations? It strikes me that they feel comfortable reporting and informing on international affairs, but seem uncomfortable on economics/business (thus the emphasis on vibes and polling on the economy). Should they be more prepared for the seemingly permanent #1 issue of importance to voters?

We often hear reporters and pundits say Republican officials say off the record how off the rails Trump is. How do they not name names if they know how bad for the country he is?

Along those same lines Chris, if we could go back in time to Trump’s second impeachment trial, do you think some GOP senators (or any of them?) would convict him if they had a chance at a mulligan, seeing where we are now and Trump is a coin flip to get back into the White House?

Again, the convicted felon’s wrath.

I live in TX. Michele Obama & George Bush always seemed to have a good rapport with one another in the public arena from what I could tell. Do you think the Obamas are wondering why George & Laura Bush continue to remain silent in who they support for President? Do you think their silence means they support Trump?

Maybe they don’t want to endure the convicted felon’s wrath.🤬

You mentioned where do the Democrats go from here if they lose. What is your thought on that? Mine is mass migration from NYC and Cali to places like Ohio and Florida. Similarly to the electoral efficiency model used by poly sci folks to make ungerrymandered districts, Democrats have large amounts of vote waste in Cali and and NY. All it would take (I say this like it’s no big thing) is 1 million people to move…500K to Ohio and 500k to Florida and suddenly the electoral map is changed to a nearly impenetrable blue fortress. The MAGAts already accuse George Soros of funding this, so why not get out and actually do this. (Side note I grew up in Orlando and now live in Cincinnati so I know both places are palatable for liberals. Though at least in Cincy we don’t have hurricanes, insane humidity, or snakes that eat alligators for fun. But we do have the original version of the Brooklyn bridge so New Yorkers will be right at home.)

Sorry to reply to my own comment....but I guess an alternative "where do they go from here?" is to take a page out of Mitt Romney's book and play the "let them fail" card. If Trump successfully implements his hair brained tariff scheme then it will take exactly one Christmas shopping season to see the disastrous inflationary effects (ie, 10-20% more expensive Lego, Mattel products, all video games, etc). And if he some how pulls off his mass deportation it will take one growing season for states like Florida to watch the cost of an orange skyrocket because they can't get the 100,000 government allowed migrant workers to agree to come back to work. So maybe the best strategy is just to sit back and say "I informed you thusly."

A few weeks (days?) ago, internal polling from Trump’s campaign was leaked suggesting he’s not doing as well as the public polling would suggest. Does that worry his team more than the public polls? Which polls do campaign lean on more—the internal or public—and why?

I’m old enough to remember when democrats loathed Dick Cheney and republicans loathed George Soros paying for votes. It appears the roles have completely reversed, with VP Harris more than warm embrace of the Cheney’s and former Pres. Trump’s warm embrace of Elon who is handing out a million dollars if you sign up for his PAC. Is this just simply the new norm? Is this how politics will continue to go in the future?

Expand full comment

Chris: I’m sure Harris has a bunch of experts telling her how best to approach the campaign but it seems to me her failure to tack to the middle is going to hurt her. Wouldn’t she have been more successful with independents and lost Rs if she could say “I need to represent all Americans and most are closer to the middle than the extremes”? It would help explain her shifting views and perhaps persuade the undecideds. I don’t think her “vote for me to save Democracy (but if I win I am at heart a California liberal)” is working. Every time I hear her this is what I think is really being said.

Hi, Chris. I hope you get to relax after all the craziness.

Do you think Republicans are really flooding the market with right leaning polls designed to show Trump is in better shape than he really is?
