I would like to see some suggestions from you about the questions that ought to be posed in the upcoming debate

Chris, with the debates set and more eyes swaying towards election stuff, we all know about Biden's problems of being perceived as too old for the job, but do you think there are increased risks for Trump as well? There have been reports about him stumbling over words, losing his place in speeches, or even zoning out for a minute. His speeches so far have really been for supporters, and they've helped cover for him (like when he kept mistaking Biden with Obama), but do you think he's at risk of displaying his own set of "senility moments", and if so what impact do you think it would have on uncommitted voters?

Ok. So we've got 2 scheduled debates on the books between Biden and Trump.

What are the odds that these debates actually happen as planned?

Paul, this is not the correct forum to be asking questions like this. kindly refer your question to the las vegas bookmakers, who will give you the exact odds you are asking about (sorry i could not resist this snarky quip..!)

I love this response! But so that you know, I've already looked on the site I use and it's only got hard odds on who will win the election. I'll keep you posted when I get some firm Vegas odds!

(no apology necessary -I love a little good humor amongst commenters - keeps it lively and FUN....as it should be!)

joking aside (which is almost impossible for me) it would not surprise me if LV did have some bookmakers giving odds & taking bets. but if there is not, i think there might be a biz angle here: "Paul & Marks Political Betting Parlor"

100%. If you and I have already thought about the odds/wagers on this issue, somebody somewhere has posted odds.

I like what you're thinking on side hustles here!!!!

OK. This is in the realm of “never gonna happen,” but I’ll throw it out there anyway. Back in the day (I’m old like some other subscribers), we had Civics in high school. I took AP Political Science as well. Given the appalling ignorance of many voters regarding how government works (or is supposed to work), should the high school curriculum include Civics again? Doing so won’t educate current voters, but it would educate their children. Thoughts?

Hey Chris,

Isn’t there anything that can be done to remove Aileen Cannon from the documents case in FL? Her obvious ongoing bias towards Trump is really disgusting.

Can I offer a lawyer’s opinion? At this point he really doesn’t have good legal grounds for such a move. I know how frustrating it is but you can’t have people moving to change judges when they feel they are losing, so there’s pretty much a rule against it unless the judge states in unambiguous terms that she/he e.g. thinks the defendant is guilty (or innocent). There was recently a state case being live streamed; during a break, the judge didn’t realize she was still being streamed and said to her assistant that she was sure the defendant was guilty. It was a jury trial but as soon as she realized the mike was still on, she declared a mistrial, disqualified herself and apologized to all involved.

I do agree that she is totally biased but the legal basis just isn’t there.

Hi Chris -

[Insert Reason Here] From this point forward; if either of the two presidential candidate front runners were unable to accept the nomination leading up to their respective parties convention or were nominated and unable to continue on until election day; does the vice president or vice presidential candidate automatically take their place/assume their votes? Are there other unique ways a scenario like this could play out during the election cycle?

This is a serious question. Mitt Romney is apparently upset that President Biden didn't pardon Trump. I casually knew Mitt's parents decades ago and they were much more rational than this. My question: has Senator Romney gone nuts? Does he really believe Trump should have been pardoned? Is Romney trying to get back in the good graces of the MAGA crowd? Has Mitt fallen off the wagon?

Expand full comment

Agree Mitt is different, but after a lot of thought, maybe not the worst idea. The trials are going pretty much 'nowhere'. Pardoning someone means they are 'guilty' of something. Not sure the recipient has to accept, but 45 may have been impulsive enough to jump on it. Maybe Chris can 'weigh in'....

To accept the pardon, he has to admit guilt.

My take is that even if the pardon comes with the string attached to exit public life, no way Trump fades into the background.

are we talking about the very same political flip-flopping shape-shifting guy who supposedly ran for prez against Obama in 2012? a lot of us seem to remember that Obama was re-elected virtually unopposed, but a historian will tell you he actually ran against Romney. 😎

Is there anything that better illustrates the power Trump has over the GOP than the parade of lawmakers attending his trial in New York? And what impact, if any, do you think their appearance has on the jury?

Would Trump have decided to run for preisdent again if he didn't feel he was facing legal jeopardy and saw the election as a way to avoid serious consequences by cancelling prosecution, pardoning himself, or claiming election interference?

I'm calling on your prognostication ability. I am sold on your assertion that our politics is swinging on a pendulum, and that someday (SOMEday) this Maga influence will wane and the pendulum will swing back toward what I think of as "normal". Let's suppose, for the sake of discussion, that Trump wins reelection this year (which you have made clear is possible). Here's my question: If Trump and his loyalists succeed in implementing crazy Maga stuff and/or 1%-er economic dreams, and any of various bad things happen (unemployment skyrockets, violent crime skyrockets, the economy tanks for all but the uber-rich, things of that nature), does that accelerate the pendulum's swing back to "normal", or are we sunk for decades?

How is it possible that David Muir and Linsey Davis have been chosen to moderate the debate ABC is hosting, as neither of them have any experience in this arena? Wouldn't one of the ABC reporters you mentioned (Karl, Stephanopoulos, Raddatz) have a much better chance of success in keeping things (Trump) on track? Not to take anything away from their skills, but I think of David and Linsey as anchors who read copy, rather than experienced interviewers, with deep knowledge of political issues.

If the 2 debates DO take place, and IF Trump doesn't try (and succeed) in getting the mic cut-off rule thrown out, I have visions of the lengths he'll go to to get around that agreement. For instance, stalking over to Biden's mic and talking over his shoulder, etc. We all know this is not a man who thinks any rules apply to him, loves to bully on a debate stage and interrupt his opponent, and can't stand not being in control. I don't see how they can keep him in one spot and quiet during Biden's time other than putting him in a plexiglass soundproof booth. How do you realistically think CNN will enforce the agreed upon 'rules'?

Nikki Haley, even after she has pulled out out of the running as the Republican nominee, consistently pulls about 20% of the primary votes. My question is, is it legal/possible to put her on the general election ballot, particularly in swing states? If it is why shouldn’t/wouldn’t a Biden aligned group do so in order to pull votes away from Trump?

Hi, Chris:

I have a polling question. Can you explain the difference between registered voters and likely voters and how that can impact polls? Should we take one more seriously than the other?

So who is paying for these people to fly up to the court? Yeah, not much for a flight from DC to NYC but short notice usual ups it a bunch.

What are your thoughts on the Harrison Butker commencement address where he basically tells the female graduates that they are better off just staying in the kitchen and raising kids than trying to pursue a career outside the home? If he wants to go back and live in the 1950s, does he not realize that he wouldn't be able to get a job in the NFL? Soccer-style kickers were not a thing back then. It's called progress dude.
