It would actually be "The Deep Fried State". Republicans who want to replace him are saying (Princess Leia voice) "Help me, KFC, you are my only hope!"
“Over the course of my over 25 years of experience in the courtroom, I have seen firsthand how a cavalier and arrogant contempt for the rule of law can backfire,” he said. “The jury verdict should be treated with seriousness and is another example of the indefensible behavior of Donald Trump.”
That’s from Asa Hutchinson. So, credit where it’s due.
I changed my registration to Republican in order to vote against Elise Stefanik in primary. Hutchinson now has my vote if he avoids coming out holding a huge WMD like Nikki Haley recently did. She was in the running but has been pretty quisling forever.
Liz Cheney probably has my vote if she gets in. Or she gets a write-in if Hutch fails me.
I live in Texas and am a Democrat. I have never voted for President. My state not only does not count my vote, it is counted as a vote for a Republican every time (in the electoral collage) . I am going to change my registration to Republican as none of my votes for any Democrat are ever counted. I will not act as a spoiler and vote for the worst Rep, hoping they will lose in the general, I will vote for the best. As a Registered Rep, I might at least be able to have my vote count a little bit in the primary. Ted Cruz, I am looking at you.
Good piece, with one error: Trump wasn't convicted of sexual assault charges (as in a criminal proceeding) but was held liable for sexual assault and defamation in a civil proceeding.
Which *should* be disqualifying, alongside (waves around hands generally), but they aren't the same. The standard of proof in a civil proceeding is much lower, for one thing, hence OJ Simpson being acquitted of murder but being found liable for the deaths of Ron and Nicole.
A side note: I use the OJ case as an example when explaining to clients the difference between civil and criminal matters. When I hear "who's OJ Simpson?" in response, that's when I plan to retire.
So in the US they ban books, they ban abortion rights, they worship ‘family-life’, love assault rifles and adore a lying sex predator for president. From overseas this sound utterly crazy. I am so sorry to see the country I once lived in going down the drain. Day by day.
Yes, before I retired I worked with my employer’s software labs in the UK and Canada. This was during 2015 and 2016. To a person I was always asked two things: 1) What’s up with this Trump guy and 2) is your healthcare system as bad as it seems?
Trump was seen as a complete buffoon. And I even got into a lengthy discussion about US healthcare with a gate attendant at the Toronto airport.
Yes the Republicans may ''still''can't quit Donald Trum but you can bet safely that the Country still don't want Donald Trump. The Country rejected him in 2020 and will reject him again in 2024 if the Republicans nominate him again in 2024 instead of DeSantis.
My favorite line from the TV series Justified is, "If you run into an as*hole in the morning, you ran into an as*hole. If you run into as*holes all day, you're the as*hole."
How is it that Republicans haven't figured out Trump is the as*hole?
Trump wasn’t convicted of anything. This case was not in a criminal court with the district attorney serving as a prosecutor. It was a civil lawsuit, and he was found to owe money to the plaintiff. He was not convicted of anything. He’s not going to jail and he gets no criminal record from this case.
I just left a comment saying the same thing, before I saw this one. Sadly, they haven't yet figured out how to retroactively change emails once they've been sent out.
“The jury is a joke,” said Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. “The whole case is a joke.”
Who gives a flying freak what Li'l Marco has to say? He had his chance to prove his bona fides eight years ago and all he could come up with was "small hands" a a response to the Defendant-In-Chief.
A self-described "Law & Order" guy and he calls the judicial system a joke.
Time to come back with your shinebox, Li'l Marco....total Trump fluffer.
It all sickens me. The spineless cowards that support Trump. He will never go away, unless he dies (even skeptical about that!), he is here to stay. IMO, he should have been gone before he got the nomination in 2016. He conned enough of the country to become the nominee and then president elect with the way the electoral college went. If this was a Democrat, the republicans would be shouting from the rooftops. I can’t even imagine Jim Jordan, Kevin McCarthy, Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, etc.. They are all aboard this train wreck and will continue supporting him. No one else is stepping up and getting into the ring, DeSantis?? He won’t go anywhere and the rest of them won’t gain traction. The disgrace of all of this is not only supporting him and getting the nomination, it’s the country may vote him back in.
This should be contrasted with the performative outrage over the Clinton/Lewinsky affair at the time by Republicans including House impeachment managers Lindsay Grahaam and Asa Hutchison.
I liked your column because I agree with your analysis though it fills me with total disgust and despair as a forgotten and displaced conservative, former Republican and woman. I keep voting for the most moderate Democratic candidate available waiting for the sting of defeat to stop Republicans from persisting in the morass of kow towing to the immoral corruption, reflexive retaliation and counterproductive results that they've gotten from Trump. I'm still waiting.
He's going to win the Republican Presidential nomination--doesn't matter what has happened in the past, or even what will happen in the future. And, he will win in November of 2024. It infuriates and nauseates me to write this, but I think that voters in this country--or a huge chunk of them, anyway (enough to win an election)--LIKE who and what he is.
And, yes, that speaks volumes about us as a people.
So the Party of Law and Order now thinks an indictment from a Grand Jury means nothing and they should take no action until a guilty verdict is returned? In how many years? They are not sending these people like Trump and Santos to jail, they would just be saying they are unfit to serve in Government with the evidence we have now. If found innocent, they can run again.
At this point, if the man has a heart attack the diehard supporters would claim McDonald's was part of the deep state conspiracy against him.
It would actually be "The Deep Fried State". Republicans who want to replace him are saying (Princess Leia voice) "Help me, KFC, you are my only hope!"
It would be his own fault for letting his guard down and allowing a McDonald's operative to get so close to him.

Good luck with that, Kevin. I did that in 2000 in Massachusetts to vote for John McCain. Didn't help.

We need better PR among other things.

Yup, you are right! Have changed the language to "found liable" rather than "convicted."
Thanks for the clarification!

Get on that, Substack!
Thank you sir. La Cheeserie! 😀

Phase 2: Pray that Trump dies.

"Convicted" isn't the correct word, legally. But, nevertheless, point well taken.
