"Go to the capitol and fight like hell" or words to that effect seem to constitute sending the mob down the street. It couldn't have been a lot clearer, so I don't know how you can be unsure about that.
Also the fact that many came armed to the teeth (documented by DC police) and trump knew that according to testimony from Cassidy Hutchinson. She overheard him say something to the effect "they're not here to hurt me". So, who were they there to hurt?
In Trump's defense (and I am loathe to defend him), he did have every intention of going with them, but his handlers (secret service, the limo driver, etc.) wouldn't allow it. I believe that came out of the Jan 6th investigation.
And what was his intention in going to the capitol? It could only have been to make a dramatic entrance and stop the vote count, since “traitor” Mike Pence wouldn’t do it for him.
And we know from the Jan 6 Committee testimony that he tried to do just that but the Secret Service stopped him. Also we know that the phony electors were ready to be rolled out as the only "lawfully slated " electors.
I couldn't agree more. He didn't say...go attack the Capitol or go overthrow the government but he did say we're going to walk down to the Capitol "and I'll be with you". His intention was clearly to stop the count. And he knew they were armed.
During the same speech, Trump also told his followers to march peacefully and patriotically. There is a reason that Jack Smith never charged Trump with insurrection. That charge can't be proven in court.
One small line in the middle of a seemingly endless diatribe of lies. (Yes, the headache I now have is from reading his "poor me" remarks.) I'm sure telling his minions to come to DC because "It will be wild!" was presaging peaceful protest.
I will give him this: Narcissists are skilled at getting other people to do their dirty work and then feigning innocence and ignorance.
Yes, it was like Tony Soprano being President of the US. "He never had to say the words."
Legally, it's very difficult to hold a political speaker responsible for the actions of people who are inflamed by his words and commit crimes. Suppose, for example, I'm on my soapbox and scream, "No justice, no peace!" Then some fool goes out and burns down a building. Maybe someone is killed. What did I mean when I said 'no peace?" The Supremes have repeatedly ruled that is politically protected speech.
The test for POTUS isn’t the same as the heightened standard for a criminal conviction. McConnell, Graham, and McCarthy all stated correctly and unequivocally that Trump was morally responsible. McConnell also said it was impeachable. Trump’s conduct on 1/6 is one of numerous disqualifying factors.
You state that as if it were a fact. It's not. It's a moral opinion. As I recall, Trump was impeached by the Democrats and acquitted by the Republicans on this very issue.
Well, I cited the facts of the comments of McConnell , Graham, and McCarthy. I also cited the fact that the standard for who should be president is not the same as whether someone can be convicted of insurrection. Yes, it is my opinion that moral culpability for an assault on the Capitol is disqualifying. It is also my opinion that constantly lying about election fraud is disqualifying . Same with adverse verdicts for fraud and sexual assault. If all those things aren’t disqualifying in your view, we operate with different moral codes.
I'd bet dollars to donuts that if the Republican senators could get a redo on that vote today, they would absolutely impeach him so he could never serve as POTUS again (or run for POTUS). The majority of them spinelessly chose not to impeach him because they mistakenly thought January 6th spelled the end of his political career. They underestimated him... as they had many times prior.
By the way, there were 10 GOP HOR who voted to impeach and 7 GOP Sens who voted to convict. Ds don’t have a monopoly on good sense and decency, but they certainly have a strong market position
“ And after this, we're going to walk down, and I'll be there with you, we're going to walk down, we're going to walk down.
Anyone you want, but I think right here, we're going to walk down to the Capitol, and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we're probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them.
Because you'll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong. We have come to demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated, lawfully slated.”
And then at the end:
“ And we fight. We fight like hell. And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore.
Our exciting adventures and boldest endeavors have not yet begun. My fellow Americans, for our movement, for our children, and for our beloved country.
And I say this despite all that's happened. The best is yet to come.
So we're going to, we're going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue. I love Pennsylvania Avenue. And we're going to the Capitol, and we're going to try and give.”
Hi Chris. An overall assessment of the speech would have been helpful. Words such as sane, reasonable, inclusive, consensus building, focused on problem solving, working for the people, centrist, and optimistic come to mind. As opposed to insane, unreasonable, focused on conspiracies and grievances, self pitying, divisive, vengeful, unlawful, violent, and useless come to mind
Chris - on #2 - I believe we DO know Trump “sent” the mob, or at least some of them. It was part of the team in the Willard Hotel War Room, which Steve Bannon and Roger Stone were part organizers and leaders. Trump and team had pre-arranged for the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers and others to march to the Capitol. They left the Ellipse early to be sure they would disrupt before the certification was to begin at 1:00 pm, partly because they knew Trump would not finish his speech before 1:00 pm. Recall, Trump instructed Mark Meadows to go to the Willard to meet with Stone, et. al. the night before, however, Meadows opted to call into the meeting on the 5th.
It is clear Trump sent the mob - just not all of the folks at the Ellipse were in on the plan.
Speaking of Republican women -- the crowd at the Ellipse was not primarily from any one of the Blue Wall states, as it wasn't held there, but I saw one guy (fit, trim, likely in the military) with a brand-new Republicans for Harris Walz T shirt and one woman with a brand-new Republicans for Harris Walz T shirt. Dems need to see more of those T shirts to win, but I think men may be wearing them, too.
It's the economy stupid.... Worried this is way too much an elite coastal liberal argument about democracy.... When most Americans have no clue what living in a country without Democracy feels like... Guess what I do (Nigeria, Libya and Kenya) and it is not fun. Americans are spoiled brats and have no idea what an authoritarian Govt looks like.
Regarding item 2: Make no mistake, he sent them there. And some who are sitting in jail have said clearly and distinctly that he did so. It was part of their defense strategy. Regarding item 12: Harris’ half truth ? Chris, you are splitting hairs. Her estimate is closer to the truth than anything T says, ever.
“We will never give up. We will never concede. It doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved. Our country has had enough. We will not take it anymore, and that is what this is all about. And to use a favorite term that all of you people really came up with, we will stop the steal....
“You will have an illegitimate president. That is what you will have, and we can’t let that happen....
“We fight like hell, and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore....
"We’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you. … We are going to the Capitol....
"[We're] going to try and give them the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”
Donald Trump on 1/6/2021. This sounds to me like Donald Trump “sent” the mob to the Capitol.
Further evidence: according to today's reporting, so far Trump has not called Nickie Haley!!!! He really has contempt for women and sees no value in having them with him.
Re: #15. Trump may not be explicitly saying he'd cut Medicare/SS, but he does say he'd put Elon Musk in charge of cutting government spending and Musk is pretty clear that if he had his way programs for the poor & underprivileged would have to go.
He never thinks that his employees work hard. He was calling them out for not staying late and sleeping in the office. Add in that he doesn't believe in overtime. Now Trump is saying no income taxes. Tariffs will pay for everything. Trump will have to pay a country to take the immigrants and transportation like UK did and failed. His Fed choice is a gold standard person. Trump wants McKinley era gvt. MAGA kids in Florida were threatening early voters by showing off their machete. Guy in Indiana who is Trumper stole votes. Luckily they got them from his house. Yeah, crazy might be coming back. Compared to real left governments, the Dems are very, very conservative. UK pundits compare Harris to Rishi Sunak. Yet our right ppl like Dutch call them Marxist and Trump is the same candidate.
#2 He did. I remembered,”we’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and I’m going to go with you…”; but, I wanted to be certain. So, I read NPR’s transcript of DJT’s ellipse speech on Jan 6. He said it THREE TIMES!!! Three SEPARATE times; once near the beginning and twice closer to the end. BUT, I’m so glad I reread that speech. It is the strongest argument for not allowing him anywhere near the seat of power. For Halloween, you should reread it to give yourself chills. About half the speech is an attack on American media and news reporters and how they should be “straightened out”.
This was a great speech and it was delivered perfectly. The message is clear - Kamala Harris is a president for all of America, not just the one who agree with her. Gahd! I hope she wins!! Maybe it will end the anxiety attacks I experience every morning.

They saved him from an indictment for insurrection. I
True
And, given what was happening up there, was a good decision by the Secret Service.

"We have to fight like hell, or we don't have a country anymore" or something very similar to that
During the same speech, Trump also told his followers to march peacefully and patriotically. There is a reason that Jack Smith never charged Trump with insurrection. That charge can't be proven in court.

Yes
You’re not sure he sent the mob? Really?
“ And after this, we're going to walk down, and I'll be there with you, we're going to walk down, we're going to walk down.

Does that help clear it up for you?

Precisely! And it's our goal next Tuesday to make sure that they don't have the opportunity to find out!
Well said.

You’re not sure trump sent the mob? You’re not keeping up with four year old, clearly established facts.
“We will never give up. We will never concede. It doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved. Our country has had enough. We will not take it anymore, and that is what this is all about. And to use a favorite term that all of you people really came up with, we will stop the steal....

Good piece Chris. I agree with Rebecca. Did he not also say (and by some account tried) that he would accompany the mob (to) going to the Capitol?
He said "we’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you. … We are going to the Capitol."
Further evidence: according to today's reporting, so far Trump has not called Nickie Haley!!!! He really has contempt for women and sees no value in having them with him.
"Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall" comes to mind regarding Haley.
He's pissed bc she ran against him. Such a petty little man.
And I am pissed bc she got me "barred permanently" for donating, then she jumps ship. I should get a refund.
This is very informative. But i think we're all waiting on your breakdown of the Joe Rogan-Trump interview.
Yes!!!!

Chris, whom do you believe sent the insurrectionists to our Capitol on January 6, 2020?
Margaret, we all know it was organized and orchestrated by BLM, Anteffa, fake news, and Nancy Pelosi. (Did I leave anybody out?) 😅
