This makes me want to laugh hysterically, then sob.

I think that's about the right reaction, honestly.

Brilliant once again, but can’t help but think of the famous quote in ‘Billy Madison’ whenever TFG is interviewed, “...what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone is now dumber for having listened to it.”

HA! This one was, honestly worse than most. Just totally all over the place. No rhyme or reason to his answers. Just saying stuff.

Trump is really mentally ill. I'm surprised that psychiatrists don't say what they think of him. I agree with Dr. AI that trump will lose the election. But!! If he wins, I'm getting off all social media, will cancel all subscriptions, and hunker down for a LONG time.

Chris,

Fantastic work.

Once and for all, I wish an interviewer would ask Trump exactly who are part of the cadre of "they" he always refers to.

Names of anyone outside of his sycophantic legions would suffice.

Even as a less than serious question, it would be fun to see him squirm.

I, too, have a beautiful girlfriend in Montana!!! Jeeez, this stuff just writes itself, horrifyingly, this guy could be the next President. (love that line, will use it all day today !) I glanced through the comments and i sure hope Dr Ibrahim is correct... I worry. I worry about the electoral college. Chris, would it be a good strategy to concentrate solely on the states that are going to decide this and just hope that CA and NY do the magic? I am confident that MOST of America does not want this buffoon and will chose Biden, but..... the electoral college. thanks

I think Trump will almost certainly lose the popular vote. But, as you say, the electoral college is a whole different animal.

WISHFULTHINKING TO SAY THAT DONALD TRUMP WILL BE TGE PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY AGAIN. I know you are trying to create an illusion of that in people's mind and in their subconscious. It's not going to work though as he will never be the President of this country again. He was rejected in 2020 and he will be rejected again in 2024.

Again, Doctor, I hope that your confidence and optimism are justified.

Trump's ability to sink to lower and lower depths every time he opens his mouth continues to amaze me.

Yes, it's all Trump's alternative universe. The concept of "truth" is irrelevant to him. He says whatever he feels is useful to his cause. Many of us laugh. But if you sample right wing social media, you'll see his Trump's nonsense is accepted as gospel. His followers are a noxious coalition of the ignorant, bigoted,&greedy, the latter caring only about keeping taxes low.

As he said, he loves the uneducated.

Chris, thank you for continuing to bring transparency and logic to light. It's amazing that people believe this, but here we are. Please keep fighting the good fight against disinformation, 'alternative facts' and conjecture.

Chris, I’ve said it before, I love when you do these and can hear you actually saying the words. There is no bottom and just no words to try and see how people can actually believe this stuff. It’s all a lie. I do not think he deserves to be on air, spewing the lies. Others will say, he is the presumptive Republican nominee, so he deserves to be covered. However, he bulldozes over the interviewer and spews the lies, how is that right? If he is to be interviewed, he needs to be pushed back and hard, must be taped. When airing the interview, fact checks must be displayed via chyrons.

I can’t fathom that due to the electoral college, he may occupy the Oval Office once again. Sad!

He is not going back to the Oval office again. Mark my words. He is going to be defeated again in 2024. He's going to lose the popular votes as well as the Electoral college votes ,flawed as it is.

I wish I could be as confident as you are.

I wish I could be as confident, too. My father-in-law was a pollster at Gallup, and he said the same things in 2016. Trump defied the odds once, so I have no doubts that he could do it again. I do understand why some people voted for him back then, although I didn't agree with them. I don't see how anybody could vote for him now.

Expand full comment

Exactly. I never thought he’d be elected in 2016. I stayed up late on election night and my heart was sinking as John King, at the magic wall, started sounding a bit pessimistic that Clinton could win it. Let’s see where we need the votes from, it’s tough but it can happen. It was slipping right through her hands and realized the glass ceiling was smog going to be smashed.

Would be curious to hear how your class thinks Trump should be covered, or any prominent political figure who has a penchant for lying should be covered? What is the right way to cover the statements Comer keeps making, as an example, with wild speculation and no evidence?

Expand full comment

Mike, good question. I will raise it with them.

Chris - what is the solution to covering Trump? Each time he is interviewed, or speaks for that matter, most of what he says is nonsense. However, once he has spoken each lie or falsehood, it is then shared or repeated on social media, even if there is a fact check right after each lie (reality is, if anyone tried to fact check or clarify each lie or statement of gibberish when each is spoken, the interview would be so choppy and tense it would not be viewable, and Trump would not sit for more than a minute or two of such an exercise). So even if fact checked, the clip of the lie is what most people see or talk about. Could the video be embedded with a label or watermark (which could not be scrubbed, erased or hidden) which would indicate the statement is a lie, or unproven, or without substantial evidence, etc., so that whenever it is shared, it has a graphic on the screen clearly stating it is a lie. With the MTP Interview, it was taped in advance, so each statement could have been labeled in advance.

Otherwise, should the reputable media just stop interviewing him altogether? As fun as these interviews are, I cannot help but think there has to be some way to stop platforming and spreading the lies.

Mike, I am going to write on this tomorrow. I think it's a real conundrum. On the one hand, he is the leading contender to be the Republican presidential nominee. On the other, almost everything he says is false.

Expand full comment

Thank you Mr Mike Eckel. I honestly was having the same thoughts and views you just expressed. The media should just stop platforming the lies and deception Trump keep spewing out. There are much more genuine and factual things going on in the country now and worldwide that the sitting President is involved in. Why don't they cover these things instead of Trump 24/7. Sometimes you wonder if some of these guys and News media are interested in the moving tge country forward or just the no. of viewers they have. God help us all

What to say!! It is astonishing that this man might be potus! Shouldn' t there be a minimum IQ for the job, minimum knowledge of history and politics? I think we demand more knowledge from immigrants to be citizens than is required to run for office by US citizens...ridiculous!

Do you have any idea as to the ratings for this broadcast? He would say it was the highest ratings ever. But, I wonder, how does all of this nonsense play on a major network?

“Trump’s claims about Antifa’s impact are, er, a little overblown. Portland and Minneapolis are still standing. And, in the case of the latter city, an examination of arrest records showed that it was mostly locals not outsiders who were detained by the police.”---Chris Cillizza

I believe over 100 people were prosecuted in Minneapolis, and at least 90 people in Portland were prosecuted for setting fires, destroying property and resisting arrest. Many under federal laws. That said, the only murderers were right-wing militia members. One federal employee was murdered by the Boogaloo-Boys in Oakland, another severely wounded, not ANTIFA or BLM activists. In Kenosha, Kyle Rittenhouse, killed two unarmed BLM activists and wounded a third. Yet, these are heroes to the far-right and MAGA movement.

Every movement is infiltrated by a criminal element looking to take advantage of the situation. It happens everywhere.

As the adage goes, “every great cause becomes a movement, evolves into a business, and then devolves into a racket!”

BLM is no different. Yet, all the peaceful protesters for BLM are labeled terrorists, while the J6th insurrectionists who cause massive damage to the Capitol, and led to 160 officers wounded, and nine people dead, are the true heroes of America.

Yup, they’re definitely making America great again! Perhaps in an alternate universe with alternative facts...:)
