For the final 50 days of the campaign, I wanted to bring my subscribers something really special. Something that could make them smarter about the week that was and the week to come in the 2024 campaign.
So I reached out to my friend Chuck Todd, longtime moderator of “Meet the Press” and one of the best political minds in the business, to see if he was open an idea I had.
The idea came from sports. I’ve always been a big fan of Bill Simmons. He’s thoughtful, funny and always one step ahead. One of my favorite things Bill does on his podcast is his weekly Sunday/Monday NBA chats with Ryen Russillo, a former ESPN host who how is building his own sports empire.
I liked those conversations because it was not just two smart people talking hoops, it was two people who were friends. Who had a rapport. Who had known each other for a long time — and knew how the other thought.
I wanted to recreate that — but in the world of politics. And there was only one person to do it with: Chuck.
We have known each other for the better part of two decades — all the way back to when Chuck was running The Hotline and I was working for Charlie Cook.
Chuck, thankfully, said “yes” when I approached him with the idea.
Our first episode is above. We talked the second Trump assassination attempt, how much credit Kamala Harris deserves for her rapid rise in the polls and whether Trump’s turnout game is up to snuff. We also chatted some about NCAA conference realignment! (Chuck and I also both love sports!)
Our plan is to make this a weekly show — running Mondays from now through the election. This first episode is free for everyone. All future episodes will be for paid subscribers only.
