The fact Texas sends people like Roy, Cruz and Gohmert to Washington makes secession an empty threat as well or at least an unfulfilled promise. Please go!
Chris - I had to laugh when I saw this line, "The smarter members of the Freedom Caucus — Jim Jordan, for one...". My first reaction was this statement must be an intended oxymoron. To me, based upon the point you were trying to make, it might have been better to say some of the members of the Freedom Caucus made smart decisions. In my mind, just because someone makes a 'smart decision' at some point does not make them 'smart' or 'smarter'. With Jim Jordon specifically, there is ample evidence indicating he may not be one of the 'smarter members' of the Freedom Caucus, including, without limitation, his participation with then President Trump on the planning around the effort to subvert the constitution prior to and on January 6th; his flailing leadership of the "Weaponization of Government" Committee; and his lack of leadership and support for the Ohio State University wrestlers who reported to him as their assistant coach they were being sexually assaulted by the team doctor; just to name a few. There are many examples of Jim Jordon implying he is not among the "...smarter members..." of almost any group. Nevertheless, I would concede, yesterday it appears Jim Jordon made a smart calculation that there was not value in threatening Speaker McCarthy with losing the speakership - yet, for me, it is a leap too far to then say this one decision makes Jim Jordon one of the smarter members of the Freedom Caucus.
Chris, I bet you knew you’d get some people excited by noting Jordan is smart, even if only in that bunch. This is part of why it is fun and thought provoking to read you. Thanks
It might be revealing to see the results of a Quiz given to Freedom Caucus members about how the Legislative process is conducted in a Democracy, with negotiations that result in compromises. To deny the validity of compromise is to deny Democracy--is that their goal?
Another interesting quiz might be an IQ test for Freedom Caucus members. To see their public behavior and read their rhetoric one has suspicions about their IQ levels.
Oh God, Jim Jordan. Sad! I truly can not stomach him and admit I don’t follow all that he does, or doesn’t do. I just can’t. With that said, all of these GOP members do is whataboutism, they do what they claim dems do. Trump was weaponizing the government, yet to listen to Jordan, not at all and yet here he is trying to do the same. They seem to have loud, obnoxious voices and yet, can seem to get out of their own way. Empty suits, empty threats.
The "Freedom Caucus" is the most misnamed group in Congress. Sedition Caucus would be a much better name.
Does it seem like Joe Biden is a better dealmaker than the art of the steal guy?
I may write on this actually. Harder to make the argument that Biden is a doddering old fool if he is able to cut deals like this, right?
I’ve heard a few people pointing particularly to the tweet by Nancy Mace that exemplifies the cognitive dissonance.
“Washington is broken.
Republicans got outsmarted by a President who can’t find his pants.”
Yeah, that really doesn’t speak well for her fellow Republicans. Lucky for them she’s so sharp. 🤪
Calling Jim Jordan a "smarter member"--of ANY group--is painful to read. But probably true...
I DO think he is smart and strategic. In ways that most of the Freedom Caucus is not.

Thank you
Understand the perspective. I actually think Jordan is much more strategic than many members of the Freedom Caucus.
Faint praise - is it because Jordon is actually smart, or that the bar set by the comparison group is quite low...

Excellent analysis, Chris.
My only nit pick issue is putting the name Jim Jordan and word smart in the same sentence.
Perhaps "aware" is more approriate since Gym is certainly not smart.
“I mentioned the bisque”
Brilliant.

Not only are their threats empty, the brains of the Freedom Caucus members are empty as well!
Babbling noise by IQ challenged wannabes!
