And what happens the moment Johnson touches reality? He has to negotiate with the Senate and President on appropriations in November. How long will the shutdown last, given that the House Republican caucus lives in a bubble and reality kills them? Will he make it to December? January? The moment he negotiates an appropriation deal, he’s dead.

Oh boy, the guy's excited that Trump will call him back within a couple of hours. I hope this ends as poorly for him as it did for the others.

Dan, you watch it's certainly will end badly for him. He should ask Michael Cohen, Mark Meadows, Jena Ellis etc etc. Mark my words

Maybe there was a plan? Hear me out. The Trumpians throw the House into chaos, so any remaining resistance become exhausted and desperate. Then they will vote in literally anyone who can stop the chaos and get things moving again. And then Trump gets to be the kingmaker and get a total loyalist in the Speaker chair. We have seen this many, many times in European history. The party causing all the chaos is also promising to end the chaos... all they ask for is power to lead. Hopefully American history will not repeat what we went through.

That image of those grinning, mocking Republicans is going to haunt the GOP for a long time.

Just no words anymore, an utter disgrace.

How many of the GOP House members genuinely believe the election was stolen and how many do you think are just saying believe it, and are doing the same with other issues, because they are afraid of Trump? The scary part is the ones who have convinced themselves it’s true, solely because Trump said it. It really has become a cult.

I’ll hazard a guess, Mark: I think the majority of them do NOT believe in their hearts that the election of 2020 was stolen. I believe wholeheartedly that they’re putting their political careers over the health of our American Democracy. Period.

(The one thing that never ceases to amaze me is the lack of making logical connections in their thinking: IF the election was stolen at the TOP of the ballot, how is anything BELOW that legitimate in the least?)

There’s just no courage or integrity left in this shell of the former GOP. Even referring to it as the “Grand Old Party” seems embarrassingly anachronistic. In a two party system, we need two STRONG principled parties built upon core beliefs and policies. We’re not even close to that now...

The ones who won in Biden's District should vote against if they want to keep their job. This is the guy who wanted to overturn Biden's victory over Trump.

Really good point, now that all 220 members of the Chaos Caucus have voted for Johnson.

What are they going to tell their constituents on the campaign trail in 2024? I guess the one potential “silver lining” to this is that I believe it’s reasonable to believe we’ll see a “blue wave” in 2024 and will take back the House, increase the majority in the Senate (in spite of the Democrats having more seats in play), and keep the White House.

Of course, we’re a LONG way from November 2024 and a lot can happen between now and then...

I can't even watch this debacle.

Get ready for a very long government shutdown beginning in November. That's what this portends (among other bad things).

Which is precisely why I moved a great deal of my retirement funds into a stable value account before the last time Republicans played chicken with our economy and I will keep them their for the foreseeable future...

Very smart decision on your part.

Thanks, but spelling “their” when I meant “there” is unconscionable on my part... 😉

Johnson? No. Just no.

Anyone paying attention to the R circus of the last few months should view it all as disqualifying the Rs from holding the levers of power. But does the average voter care? Are the masses paying any attention? Chris ( or anyone else) , have you any insight or polling on the extent to which this insanity is moving the needle?

I'm far from an expert, but I think at this juncture the average voter views 2024 as a far-off, almost abstract concept - like warp-drive or how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?

Most Americans tend to focus mainly on the stuff right in front of them especially that which we can influence or control. Get the Halloween candy, who's hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas? Plans for NYE? The 2024 election will become real for most Americans when primary season gets under way.

We live in a society of distraction.

Oh, look a squirrel!

This is a terrible turn of events for American democracy. Obviously, Republicans are to blame for what just happened, but choosing not to save McCarthy was probably a mistake on the part of the Democratic Party.
