Well, that was awkward.
Democrats tried to do two things at once on Monday night at the Democratic National Convention: Celebrate Joe Biden while moving the party on to Kamala Harris.
And they had to do so with every single person in that room knowing that Biden didn’t leave the race willingly — that he had to be effectively forced out by many of the people in attendance.
Almost every speech was Kamala-centered with some “and isn’t Joe great!” line tacked on somewhere. It felt stiff. And odd.
And then there were the timing issues. The sitting president didn’t get to the stage until 11:26 pm on the East Coast — well outside of the primetime window.
While Democrats will insist that a) no one cares and b) no one watches these speeches live anyway, I can tell you FOR CERTAIN that Biden and those close to him care. And were annoyed.
Does it move any votes? Nope! But is likely adds to the tensions that already exist between the Biden inner circle and the rest of the party.
I broke down the first night of the DNC in today’s edition of The Morning.
