After Donald Trump shocked the political world in 2016 by winning the presidency, the common refrain from his supporters went like this: See, none of you understood what he was doing! He was playing three-dimensional political chess and you (reporters, Democrats, doubters etc.) were playing checkers!
This was, of course, never true. Trump was doing then what he has done his whole life — fly by the seat of his pants. Make it up as he goes. Just, well, say stuff and react to the reaction.
Two examples from the past 5 days serve as useful reminders of the zero-dimensional chess Donald Trump is playing:
His attacks on Kamala Harris as not really black or only recently black.
His extended — and personal — hits on Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp during a rally in the Peach State this weekend.
I explain it all in today’s edition of The Morning.
