It's just so difficult to take the "human Trump" of the first 25 minutes seriously. Someone who oblivious to (or worse, takes delight in) the suffering he causes for others has no business referring to his own suffering. Someone who relishes violent talk and tough-guy imaging has no business expecting people to see him as sensitive and empathetic. "I am your retribution" makes "I am running to be president for all of America" completely unbelievable. Unsurprisingly, Trump followed the first part of his speech with the second part and made it totally unnecessary to point these things out.

“Unity” for Trump is “everyone should follow me, no matter what.” That’s it. That’s the whole pivot.

I couldn’t watch the acceptance speech. I do think that it is important to know what Donald J Trump says, so I read the transcript. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/read-full-text-president-donald-trump-s-acceptance-speech-rnc-n1238636

The real Trump is at the heart of every appearance that he makes, every speech that he gives, every move that he makes. And if you take the “presentation” out of it, and if you are not distracted by the mannerisms and general ickiness of the man himself, it is a little frightening that he is even a candidate,, let alone that he could be the next President of the United States. He wants us to stop demonizing “political enemies”, unless they are his political enemies. He wants criminality prosecuted, unless it is his criminality. He wants us to accept election results only if they favor him and his acolytes.he wants us to reject immigrants, unless thy are Melania Trump. He is wholly unfit for the presidency. Whomever the final name might be at the top of the Democratic ticket, it will be worth voting for that person, and doing so in epic numbers, simply to keep Donald J Trump out of the White House

It was made abundantly clear throughout the convention that the 'unity' they are talking about is GOP unity - and the rest of us just better not get in Trump's way. Scary.

I watched the entire piece of crap speech. All he had to do was thank God his life was spared which would have taken 2-3 minutes. Then, he bragged he had beaten all of the indictments? No, you are a 34X CONVICTED FELON!!! He never mentioned the really really bad stuff like his position on abortion and Project 2025! He was low-energy and rambled along for 95 fricking minutes because he is mentally deranged! VOTE ALL BLUE AS INTEND TO DO because I will be a grandfather for the first time in October and I want my granddaughter to grow up in a democracy!

PROBLEM- Trump is Trump

Please vote blue - the only way to control Trumps Supreme Court.

"Drill baby Drill". Means big business at the cost of climate control.

You are definitely right on this one Chris - I don't give a dam if Biden is on life support, he's got my vote. At least we will have a democracy.

I dont understand how after eight plus years, we're still talking about "good" Trump vs. "Bad" Trump when it comes to these speeches. Obviously, he didn't write the first 25 minutes of his speech, and was just speaking other people's words, which are not his true feelings. Trump is at his most "honest" self when he's speaking off the cuff. The last hour of his speech last night is how he truly feels. I dont understand how some dont get that.

And to EVER classify something he says or does as “Presidential” grates. The bar is so low for this guy.

I so agree with you, Chris! I watched him until he launched into his “same old, same old.” I expected he would at some point, and I wasn’t disappointed.

There definitely is no Trump2.0 and there never will be!

And, let’s not forget Hulk Hogan and Dana White. Such word masters!!

I, for one, am glad it’s over. Now, to more serious business.

Anyone who thought trump could be “presidential” for more than a very short period of time really doesn’t understand who he is. He is who the 67 minutes showed him to be: a liar, mean and so many other things creature.

I don't even know if Trump was all that great in the first half hour because he was extremely low energy. The latter part of the speech got bad and rambly though, as usual, and I couldn't even stay up for the whole thing because for some reason, the RNC thought it'd be a good idea to have their nominee come out at 11:00PM EST. Who in the world wants to stay up at late on the East Coast, especially after having to suffer through the likes of Hulk Hogan, Eric Trump, and Kid Rock?

I guess if you're a true believer, you ate up the first 25 minutes with a spoon, but I doubt it changed anyone else's mind. I agree that it sounded flat. When he said he would only tell the story once because it's too painful to talk about, I saw no emotion at all.

Probably worth noting that the average viewer might tune in for only the first 30 mins anyway… and then change the channel. Only the diehard fans watch a speech anywhere near an hour (or in this case more). The point being… any swing voter got the good bit and probably skipped the rest.

I’m sorry, but I never had one second of believing that tRump would or could turn over a new leaf. That was a huge stretch to think it could happen.

I found the first 30 minutes, with the exception of the honoring of the three other shooting victims, to be self-indulgent...imagine Reagan going into such detail re his shooting...and overdone. The next 60 minutes...OMG. Unhinged lies amd babbling. This, along with the ill-advised choice of Goebbals wannabe Vance as VP should be the quake that shakes the dopey Dems into reality and gets them to go all in on dumping JB. ANY of the oft mentioined options not named Biden would likely defeat Trump, handily. Come on, folks. Time to make a move!

I was at a gathering at a bar last night and they had Trump's speech on the TV with the sound turned down. I didn't know what he was saying, but he clearly looked subdued. Every 10 or 15 minutes or so, somebody in our group would look at the TV and say, "He's still talking?"

The live chats were so much fun, thank you for hosting them.

I watched High School Musical: The Musical: The Series instead of the speech. Sounds like I made the right choice.
