I think I have the game plan figured out, and the scary part of this is that I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else before today.
Biden is going to do the soft-shoe for the next few days while the rest of us speculate and debate his intentions.
On Thursday, July 18th, in a brilliant move of counter-programming against the master showman himself, while Trumpty-Dumpty is making his acceptance speech at the Republican Convention, Biden will make a live "breaking news" announcement from the Oval Office that he is declining the Democratic nomination and passing the baton to Kamala Harris and the next generation.
Yes, it's a bit of a "West Wing" fantasy, but I would love it if the spray-tanned buffoon got upstaged for a change; maybe even having a major conniption fit while on stage.
If the democrats cant stand up to biden, there is no room to criticize republicans for not standing up to trump. We deserve whatever we get in this election.
I do want President Biden to step aside however I agree with many others that I wish the Media focused just as much time and energy on the existential dangers of a Trump presidency and ESPECIALLY Project2025!!!
I am fighting hard against BOTH with my group of NastyWomen here in Indiana!!! 💙🇺🇸💙
I am hoping the media will pay more attention to Trumps age and cognitive decline once Biden drops out. He is also unfit cognitively , as well as so many other ways.
why do we have to wait? His glitches and slips have increased over time as well, as well as convictions. Why aren't there calls to remove the FELON from the ballot?
I'm not screaming about anything Chris. I'm trying to educate people. Like a good Activist should. Many people have never heard of it. I resent your condescending tone as well. I can do two things at once as well. I believe Joe is not the best candidate suited to win against Trump. That's my opinion and I'm allowed to have it.
https://youtu.be/NpLpOtFNFWg?si=EkvaOog8uPGkbsiQ just a buzzword. and im no activist either- it is A-OKAY to only vote against a candidate, afterall isn't that what got us trump in the first place?
Chris, you had also recently highlighted how some of your readers were angry at you for your critical reporting of Biden's performance and how you should instead focus on Trump.
I think hiding the truth is always the worst option. Perhaps, if many of Democrats had realized just how poorly Biden had fared, there might have been more of a movement during the primaries to nominate someone else. I read a bit of the reporting on his mental fitness issues, but had dismissed them as Republican talking points, especially given the pushback from his team and senior officials. And here the Democrats are are, pretty late in the game with fewer options to fix things.
So in summary, Joe Biden is channeling Woody Harrelson's character Tallahassee from Zombieland by telling other Democrats, "It's time to nut up, or shut up."
Correct, this is about Joe Biden and the Democratic Party . There is no way Biden comes out of the convention next month as the nominee. He likely doesn’t survive this week but no way he is in the conversation after the convention.
Thanks for that comment, Chris. It was obvious Biden was dodging the journalistic media. That's on him. No town halls, even. And, to top it all, he took a pass on the sugar coated Super Bowl interview.
Trump disgust had most of us making excuses, in spite of hearing from the reasonable media (non Fox) of Biden’s inaccessibility. I have my day job, after all, which is devoted to all fronts outrage.
I’m sick of media bashing. If I missed something ( like Joe Biden media avoidance) it is on me AND the perpetrator - the campaign. I'm voting for democracy. It typically is fairly easy to distinguish fact from opinion.
Bashing the media is not helpful. It is ignorant of history, and playing into the hands of those seeking to weaken our framework. Real Journalism protects the framework. Opinion media explores avenues of thought, and does not have to accelerate conspiracy theories. That's for Facebook and the like. But, bash journalism and we would be left with social media deviants and the Pillow Guy as the reincarnation of Walter Cronkite (for the iPhone Gen- he was a trusted news broadcaster…think of him as a white version of Diddy, before it all went to hell)
Ahhh, the poor media. Poor little media. The framework is already weaken by years of conservative propaganda machines being allowed to run amuck as "journalism" or news. Conservatives have weaken every control over the "media" in the pre-social media era and there are literally none in the post social media era. 2016 was a wake up call on how the "media" is now manipulated by foreign actors and corporations who only care about $$$ fuel attention.
Over the weekend, 100+ Nazis were marching in Nashville. Those guys will be Trumps SA. That is what we should be talking about. Biden is sucking ALL of the oxygen out of the room. He is also so busy trying to prove he can complete a sentence that he is not out on the campaign trail. Not in any meaningful way, at least. The AITOW Dems need to make this end NOW. Broom JB and bring on a new nominee. One who can work hard..all day, every day..and night. (Even after 8 p.m.)
"President Biden, in a surprise phone interview on MSNBC on Monday morning, said he’s frustrated by the discussion about his fitness and the calls for him to step aside. “Any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me. Announce for president, challenge me at the convention,” he said. Biden also sent a letter to his party’s lawmakers in Congress on Monday, insisting that he would stay in the race and calling for an end to the drama within the Democratic Party. The letter comes amid rising calls from within his party for him to step aside after his poor debate performance."
Can he also ignore dropping poll numbers. I recently responded to a poll and said I'm not voting for him .
Excellent article...I agree that the return of Congress this week is important and I believe it will add the necessary momentum for Biden to release his delegates, and walk away from another run in this race.
President Biden should campaign hard every day and prove that he has the mental capacity and physical stamina to beat Donald Trump.
The opinions of Joe’s staff, Jill & Hunter, and the base are irrelevant. The question is — Can Joe win this election?
He needs to prove that he can — If he can’t, he should coordinate way to step aside as soon as possible. It would be messy and complicated but better than continuing with a candidate that is bound to lose.
If Biden steps aside, the nominee WILL be Kamala Harris. If he resigns, she'd be the incumbent. If he doesn't, she'd still be best positioned, particularly since Democrats won't want to anger two of their biggest constituency groups: women and blacks.
But, yes, it wouldn't be official until the delegates vote.
Harris is a very poor option but the only one the Ds can put up when Biden throws in the towel. She doesn’t have a realistic chance of winning. Ds are in an awful spot (of their own making) and paying the price for their cover up and hiding Biden away from his constituents. Some times you just gotta take your lumps and this is looking like that’s where we are.
Chris, I agree, Biden made his own bed. His cognitive decline was whispered about for more than a year. Perhaps if you ran the story months before the primary began, the outcome would be different. Yet, it still feels like you only ever cover Biden’s faults, while giving a pass to all of Trump’s nefarious acts.
How is it CNN could agree not to fact check Trump in real-time? Biden may have been incoherent, but Trump’s narrative could easily have be debunked. Yet, the media has only focused on Biden; 24/7 since the debate. Could it be because of access and ratings ( being sarcastic).
Additionally, how is it that even after the president of the Heritage Foundation comes out and threatens violence against anyone who tries to stop their unconstitutional takeover of federal agencies, by installing inept party loyalists, to turn this country into a White Nationalist Christian version of the Taliban, all we hear from the MSM is crickets?
And how is it that when Trump claims he’s never heard of Project 2025, the media doesn’t pounce on his lies, since most of his inner circle are the architects of the policy, just because Trump denied it?
And finally, how is it that the MSM only pays lip service to the slow, painful death of America, by a 1,000 judicial cuts (Supreme Court), and the MSM treats the story as if this is normal in a constitutional republic?
So I don’t blame the media for covering Biden negatively, he deserves it. I do however, blame all of you for your lack of fair coverage. The fact no one calls for a crooked felon, rapist and overall scammer to step down, while demanding that Biden do so, because his cognitive abilities are in decline, seems ironic at best, and replay of 2016, and the case against Hillary, at worst. This is the definition of journalistic malpractice and malfeasance.
And we all know the reason, Trump is ratings gold 24/7, and Biden is only ratings gold when the stories about him are negative. Otherwise, he couldn’t even get arrested.
I once said, I’d vote for a head of lettuce before ever voting for Trump, and although I do have concerns about Biden’s cognitive skills, at least he won’t send this nation down a rabbit hole; destroying the fabric of this nation in the process.
I think the media does not have a framework to address the lies, in a debate or otherwise.
Trump’s strategy and modus oprandi is an effing firehouse of chaos, ignorance, stupid shit, and is untethered from truth which the media has not been able to address as an institution (the 4th estate). Chris’ “best lines” dissection is the only organized presentation I have seen. Yet, this Trump Tsunami of tshit ( I wanted to alliterate) has been going on for ( FIFTEEN PERCENT of my @#% life).
How could CNN keep up with it? Perhaps a pause button, and maybe wake Biden in between the fact finding
I would love for each Trump event to be dissected and categorized by level of how stupid the guy is, what person would believe this crap, source of his belief etc.
Yes, we all know about the bleach comment. But, the category (Alex) Other Scientific Theories of DJT, as an example, might be a useful tool for media engagement.
A quick reference guide as a shared tool. It “might” sell better than the Trumpy Bear doll having sex with a Porn Sow being sold on Truth Social.
I don’t disagree with your points Brian, but saying the media doesn’t know how to disseminate Trump’s verb diarrhea, and lies, is simply wrong and dishonest. That’s an excuse, plain and simple. And if true, then I suggest they find a way forward, because their current strategy could be the ruination of America.
The reason they can’t disseminate him properly is because they’re more concerned with ratings and access, than the truth. CNN wanted the debate, and bent over backwards to accommodate Trump; just like their town hall debacle, that had only Trump supporters in the audience and fielding questions giving to him in advance.
That said, What’s good for the goose, is good for the gander. In truth, it’s a combination of being deathly afraid of Trump and his minions, and having access. And if Trump wins, how will they cover him then? With kid gloves? Afraid, they’d be sued or worse; incarcerated or put out of business?
We’ve already seen how the media kowtowed to the Bush/Cheney administration; last vindictive and vengeful administration. And how’d that work out for America?
I don't know what media YOU are consuming, but I regularly see the items covered that you claim are being ignored. Maybe you should broaden your media diet a bit.
My media diet is extremely broad. My point was they honed in on Biden, and it’s “story after story”; 24/7!
Bottom line: look at any newspaper today, and you’ll see ten stories on Biden’s cognitive decline, yet even when they cover the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, they never fully attribute it to Trump’s future nefarious plans.
Have you heard of Trump’s actual Agenda 47? Show me more than a few articles covering how Trump plans to govern in his second term. If Biden’s cognitive decline is disturbing, Trump’s future plans for America is terrifying.
A few articles on Trump in various publications without context, or follow up, aren’t covering the story properly. And perhaps you should read the headlines which always start negatively for Biden (even when the story is positive), while all the negative stories on Trump, have headlines that profess “Trump denies,” and it’s not until you actually read the full article, that one learns Trump’s entire narrative is false.
What’s worse is how all of the MSM never challenges Trump and his republican sycophants when they regurgitate Putin talking points. They allow them to stand unchallenged.
I think the NYT’s said it best: “It’s not our job to save democracy, or tell the voters how to vote!”
Yet, If that’s the case, why do they have editorials that endorse one politician over another? Or better yet, why do they call the media the “Fourth Estate”? It’s a rhetorical question, no need to answer….:)
I agree with Daniel. You may feel that the media is not emphasizing Trump’s lies and plans enough, or that you don’t like the way it’s covered; but, I have heard coverage of all of the items you mentioned, on CNN, as well as in online articles. Daniel Dale fact checked & reported immediately after the debate that Biden had told 9 falsehoods to Trump’s 30.
Again, you’re missing the point. It’s how they cover it, and how much the cover it. Are there follow ups to an article? No! How do they position the story? Does the headline truly reflect the story? No!
Look in any periodical today, and there are ten Biden stories, yet, not many about Trump’s corruption or his nefarious agenda.
Can you honestly say both candidates are being covered equally, with the same fairness? As if stated, Biden deserves the criticism, and I personally think he should step down, but not one editorial has called for Trump to step down. Why is that?
When you can answer that question, I’d like to hear your response.
Well, I’m one of the many who think Biden campaign shouldn’t blame media like they do at the post-debate period, but that’s separate topics.
You might think of yourself you are being pragmatic and practical, and that sounds fair to me. But Biden’s trying to find a way to hold his base’s morale, by being “strong” and “vigorous”, like you said in the pre-debate video! And that were the rhetorics expected from the base, too.
Nadler better be sure he's getting his own job done properly. With the exemption of Smith, the rest are nobody's. Hopefully each one of these folks get a one-on-one with either Biden or Jeffries.
I think I have the game plan figured out, and the scary part of this is that I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else before today.

That would be CRAZY
Crazy good, crazy bad, or crazy like the villains in superhero comic books?
The last option ;)
He can’t “pass the baton” to KH. If he declined the nomination prior to the DNC, the electors would vote for their candidate on 8/19.
I had the same thought. It would be worth it to watch Trump's head explode at being upstaged.
Biden is doing a better job fighting his own team than fighting the other side. PATHETIC...

Democrats to Joe: "It is time to retire gracefully and pass the torch."
Joe to his fellow Democrats: "I double dog dare you to try."

from the the WAPO:
"President Biden, in a surprise phone interview on MSNBC on Monday morning, said he’s frustrated by the discussion about his fitness and the calls for him to step aside. “Any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me. The Autarch can ignore whatever he chooses to ignore, for as long as he chooses to ignore it, right up until Trump is inaugurated.

No, it isn't REQUIRED, but it would be.

Wait. Isn’t that political pundits like you are looking for? Being “Strong”, “Up for it”, “Has the physical and mental capacity to fight back”?
You can try to make this about the media as much as you want. It just isn't about that.
Chris, I agree, Biden made his own bed. His cognitive decline was whispered about for more than a year. Perhaps if you ran the story months before the primary began, the outcome would be different.
