In September 2023, “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough said this of then former president Donald Trump:
This is not a reach, I can go back and talk about Nazi Germany and I do it without any concerns whatsoever. And if people can’t start drawing the parallels, well, you’re just stupid or you have your head in the sand, or you’re one of them.
It was one of a number of times that Scarborough — and his co-host Mika Brzezenski — compared Trump to fascist dictators of the past and insisted that his election could spell the end of democracy as we know it.
Which brings me to the announcement made by Mika and Joe this morning on their show that they had traveled to Mar-a-Lago at the end of last week to meet with — you guessed it! — President-elect Donald Trump.
Here’s Scarborough on that conversation:
We talked about a lot of issues, including abortion, mass deportation, threats of political retribution against political opponents and media outlets. We talked about that a good bit.”
It will come as no surprise to anybody who watches this show, has watched it over the past year or over the past decade, that we didn’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of issues and we told him so.
Added Brzezinski: “What we did agree on was to restart communications.”
Which, look, I get it. Trump is the president for the next four years. Republicans control the House and Senate. If you host an influential morning show, it’s hard to lock yourself out of the party in power completely.
This is the stuff that happens when power changes hands in Washington. It’s not always pretty but I get the necessity of it.
But, like, this is a guy you repeatedly likened to Hitler! Said he was a fascist! Said he would destroy democracy!
Did they not mean it then? Because if they did mean it, then it’s pretty damn hard to justify going to Mar-a-Lago to huddle with the modern-day Hitler, right? Right!
Here’s the deal. This is how a whole lot of the mainstream media works. They need access. And the way they get access is to do acrobatics like this.
I don’t do flip flops. I do transparency, authenticity and independence. You will always know where I stand and why I stand there. And if I do change my mind on someone or something, I’ll explain why clearly and publicly.
If that’s the sort of thing you want to support, I hope you consider becoming a paid subscriber to this newsletter. It’s $6 a month or $60 for the year. Thank you.
