The most animated Donald Trump became during his 64-minute press conference on Thursday in Florida was when a reporter asked him if the large crowds that Kamala Harris is drawing worried him.
Trump went on — and on — about his own crowds, exaggerating wildly again and again over how many people came to his rallies and in New Jersey, South Carolina and Alabama.
He even said more people were at his January 6, 2021 speech in DC than attended Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Stunning — and wildly factually inaccurate.
Trump’s focus on crowds is part of a broader obsession with size. He always wanted to build the biggest, most lavish hotels. When he played baseball in high school, he was solely focused on hitting home runs. When he golfs, what he cares about is being able to hit the ball far.
Bigger is always better for Trump. To him, it’s the only measure that matters. Quantity over quality. Blunt force over nuance.
I talked about this quirk of Trump’s personality in The Morning today.
