Interesting picks . Given his history with selecting brilliant and qualified people until they suddenly lose their intellects and become dumb as rocks or at least not-very-smart, one wonders how long the honeymoon will last.

Exactly, like the JB administration that selected so many great people! Keep inflation low, secured our border, insured a successful withdrawal from Afghanistan, keep peace in the world through strength so that his experienced and well qualified VP could take the reins and win a convincing presidential election with the American people solidly behind these amazing team of leaders!

Another great observation!

I hope that what will be discussed soon is Trump's idea of "recess appointments", rather than these appointments going through the usual "advice and consent" by the Senate, as laid out in the Constitution. That's authoritarianism at its best. If Trump gets away with this, then there is no point to Congress, as he will be allowed to do what he wishes.

Senators have egos - big ones - and I just don't see them giving up this level of their authority. Rick Scott said he's 100% onboard, so maybe if he becomes majority leader? A good number aren't up for reelection is 4 or even 6 years, so they'll be less focused on any potential backlash and inadvertently do the right thing.

Expand full comment

Aye, but this is TRUMP we are talking about. The GOP Senators may be afraid to defy him, some of them anyway. Some like the screwy football coach will do anything he says. I guess time will tell.

Honestly, the Senate does take way too long to appoint everybody because there are so many positions to fill and hearings eat up valuable floor time. Ambassadors and all sorts of other positions. They need to find a way to make the process go quicker or make some of the less important ones automatic and not needing confirmation. And I believe that no matter who is in the White House.

Regardless, recess appointments are only good for two years - presumably the people would still have hearings and get confirmed it's just that they would already be doing their jobs. My idea would be that anybody who gets turned down after a vote has to leave their position but that they are in the job until that happens.

Iโ€™m overthinking, but is it the norm to have so many people on the list who are current elected office holders? I mean, do they honestly think they will be holding whatever position a year from now? Or is that just how it works?

I was thinking the same thing. What are the repercussions for taking these elected representatives. Although getting Rubio out of the Senate brings me joy.

Unfortunately DeSantis gets to name his replacement. In the case of the House members (Stefanik, Waltz) there will have to be special elections.

It is an interesting observation. My take is that Trump is using an inside approach to quickly get his team in place. Speedy confirmations = fast results

Compared to 2016 these are all expected choices. They will have some political and legal challenges to overcome from the House and blue state. Governors and AGโ€™s. Thatโ€™s also where the next Democratic leader will come from so these fights with Trumpโ€™s Administration are important on many different levels. Watch for Andy Beshear, a Democrat in a red state. What he does will set the tone.

The Trump Administration still has 100 days to reduce the price of eggs, inflation and home mortgages. Thatโ€™s a truth which isnโ€™t going to go away. Trump currently supports policies which fight with themselves both helping and hurting this plan.

Exactly.

Sadly, like the 24 hour plan to solve the Ukraine war, his folks will nod their head and say, "at least he TRIED!" and blame the dems and libs for not supporting him.

It's a never ending circus and folks got tired of it in 2020 and elected an old guy and then they got tired of that old guy and elected an even older old guy and then they will get tired of him soon enough.

Thatโ€™s the great thing of the American system. Elections for politicians every two years. Trunpโ€™s time window to make a difference or to create irreversible carnageโ€™s is tiny.

The US Supreme Court is a different matter. This will be reformed eventually. Perhaps in 2028. Itโ€™s not sustainable given the influence American oligarchs have over it and itโ€™s unpopularity. This cycle we will see direct challenges to it from the states. Whether it wins or loses those, it will set the path of its own longevity.

Iโ€™m retaining every grocery receipt so I can show & excuse me, the idiots who believe prices will all of a sudden drop, that they havenโ€™t & wonโ€™t!

Expand full comment

Prices won't come down until a tariff-driven depression, which may or may not occur. But it won't be long before Trump takes credit for the taming of inflation and interest rates, never mind that the return to normal happened before election day.

Expand full comment

Tariffs will increase the price of eggs. And everything else. Republicans tend to crash the economy. Trump might do that. But then not having a job wonโ€™t help you if home mortgages are then cheaper because of an increase in foreclosures.

Trumps ideology gets in the way.

Expelling undocumented immigrants will bring home building and farming to a halt pushing up inflation. Itโ€™s better to give them a path to citizenship to ensure that they stay in those industries. Putting ideology above economics will end MAGA.

Why do they have to get citizenship? Why can't they just get a green card so they can stay and work but don't get rewarded for coming in illegally? I've never understood why only citizenship is acceptable for them.

The Trump Administration wants to remove American Citizens born to parents who arenโ€™t. A path to American citizenship is the only way to remove the threat of removal.

Itโ€™s the economy stupid ends all political regimes. If the economic lives of Americans donโ€™t improve, Republicans will lose power. Letting policy decisions which focus on ideology rather than lowering the cost of living will hurt MAGA. I wonder if Trump actually understands this lol. Also, political losses, such as the one Democrats just experienced, provide a great excuse for cutting out the unpopular parts of itself. Such as itโ€™s left wing. You can see that happening already.

What MAGA Republicans will face in the 2026 midterms and in 2028 is a Democratic Party which will look far more right wing, led by a Democratic Governor in a red state. If there is any economic pain still lingering, voters will punish Republicans.

No pressure. lol

Great article! I found the comparative appointment announcement dates very interesting. I disagree on the comment about appointmentsโ€ฆRepublicans control the Senate and I donโ€™t see any appointee which would elicit a filibuster. Also, no FBI funny business like Crossfire Hurricane where they are running an investigation on the President Elect, his incoming administration and unmasking folks using FISA authorities.
