It won’t change a single military vote… Trump could piss on the Tomb of the Unknowns and wouldn’t lose a vote from vets or active duty military personnel. The military oath to “preserve and defend the Constitution” doesn’t seem to mean much anymore.

You may be right about it not changing votes but I assure you there are a lot of vets, including myself, who wouldn't vote for Trump if he was running for dog catcher. That there is any vet out there who thinks this guy is anything but a traitor is beyond common sense.

What did that one Trump supporter interviewed in 2017/2018 say about how Trump's presidency had been disappointing to her up to that point? Something like "Well, he's not hurting the people that need to be hurt." That one comment tells you everything you need to know about the Forever Trump cult. I hope it's changing as some soldiers "earn" citizenship by volunteering in our military. According to the Migration Policy Institute, approximately 5,000-7,000 non-citizens join the armed forces annually, enabling them to become U.S. citizens quicker than non-military immigrants. As of 2022, nearly 731,000 U.S. veterans were born outside the United States, which is 4.5% of the country's 16.2 million veterans (and 731,000 U.S. veterans more than the entire Trump family).

As long as veterans and active duty military personnel are overwhelmingly Trump supporters, then they are all a bunch of MAGA meatheads as far as I’m concerned, who deserve no respect whatsoever. They should all be ashamed, if they had any sense of shame.

My parents are buried at ANC so it bothers me, but I wasn't going to vote for him anyway. I think it's further proof that he doesn't respect the sacrifice of our service members. But I thought Gen. Kelly's comments and Trump's own about the Medal of Honor were more offensive.

I think the cumulative effect of these comments will cost him votes in the military community. In a close race, I think this hurts him more than the Stormy Daniels felony convictions.

Brenda's avatar

It should. And about time. He has pretended to have respect for the military long enough. He only values them because as Commander-in-Chief, he totally controls them. He likes the pomp and circumstance, especially when he is the one they are saluting. He doesn't value their service and sacrifice to the country, only to him, and that should disgust every person who has ever worn the uniform, and everyone who has ever loved those who have!

💯Trump was enthralled by the military parade he witnessed in Paris on Bastille Day in 2017, and he wanted one in Washington, D.C. that would “top” the Paris parade (see this article from the BBC: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-42969566.amp). Such a parade was actually scheduled for November 10, 2018, but Trump cancelled it due to the cost, a whopping $92 million. Of course, he lied and blamed the D.C. government for trying to fleece him. However, the vast majority of the funds were to come from the Pentagon and from federal agencies, with D.C.’s share being only 23.5% of the $92 million. Regardless, Trump tweeted this lie: “The local politicians who run Washington, D.C. (poorly) know a windfall when they see it. When asked to give us a price for holding a great celebratory military parade, they wanted a number so ridiculously high that I cancelled it. Never let someone hold you up!”

OMG - that's right, for Veterans' Day - so much sh*t from him, it's easy to forget some. Didn't he also want the military for his inauguration and for July 4th parades?! I really don't understand how anyone can think he's worthy of their vote for president.

While this incident, combined with Trump's/Vance's recent sexist postings, etc., may not change any/many votes, does it provide impetus for voters, on both sides, to actually get out and vote? Current analysis seems to indicate the higher voter turnout would benefit Harris/Walz since Trump supposedly has a popular vote ceiling of 48%. And Trump/Vance may be losing voters among women and other voting blocs, so does that lower Trump's ceiling?

Arlington Cemetery is US Army property, adjacent to Fort Myer (location of horse-drawn caisson, Tomb of Unknown Soldiers guards' barracks. Cemetery is under Army rules & regulations. As the family seems to have clashed previously with Cemetery management over videos, and staging a large jamboree at the gravesite - why did the Army leave the responsibility for enforcement to a lone civilian employee? Army dropped the ball here. Officers and soldiers from Fort Myer should have had control of the situation and enforced Arlington's rules. Or did they want to avoid a confrontation with DJT and the MAGA family member who seems to have arranged the event? I hope the Army will do a thorough 'Lessons Learned' examination about enforcing Section 60 rules Post facto stern statements by the Army are inadequate. Is Arlington Cemetery (especially Section 60) a sacred space or not?
