You are correct Chris, up to a point. There is something more: underneath the need to feel like the “big shot” is an unconscious compulsion to be the bad boy who can still be loved, still be accepted. He cannot control his misbehavior, it will never stop, only escalate, and he has now found millions of people who identify with him and, through their support, will enable him to continue to act out their own unresolved conscious and unconscious fantasies.
Yes, exactly. He's a big baby who never admits fault or failure, and no one can tell him "no". Those things were his toys, ("I don't want anyone looking through my boxes"), and no one can take them.
