None of the people I've truly admired in my life had toughness (in Trump's case, asshole-edness) as their most salient characteristic. Much higher in my estimation is compassion, intelligence, flexibility, even-handedness, decision-making, steadiness under fire. Yes, tough when needed, but not tough for the sake of being tough. Trump has alienated all of the civilized world with his "toughness." Is that good?
The reaction to trump’s attributes - they like kicking ass and taking names, is as transactional as he is. They like it today - yay! Action! But when the fallout appears tomorrow… already regrets. 1. Chuck Grassley - tariffs great! Ooh, but can I have a carve out for potash, because it will hurt my farmers in Iowa. 2. GOP rep Maria Salazar in FL - yay! Round up those immigrants - but can you not do it in Florida - we have crops!!! 3. Lots of people - yeah, freeze that spending! Oh, but wait, clinics got closed across Mississippi and Alabama. 4. Yay, close down that USAID - all that wasted money! But - USAID bought $2.1 BILLION in grain from US farmers to supply that aid. Oops. Farmers in Kansas not happy. And on and on and on…
I just voiced the same thoughts to my husband this morning. Lots of red states receive the government handouts Trump says he will cancel. Let’s see how long it lasts.
Bingo. Red states are getting hit the hardest. Same as last go-round. For some reason, they don’t seem to notice. Or they believe trump when he says it’s Biden or Obama’s fault - or Hillary - the emails! 😁 Now, never mind that a wreaking crew of 6 with no clearance or oath-taking to the Constitution want to access all kinds of private data - and JD Vance says the courts are out of line in stopping them.
Now, Repubs have all of it. sooner or later the chickens will come home to roost.
While I think you’re completely accurate that the pain will be felt more in the red states than elsewhere, Dawn, I don’t trust Trump’s Cult Members will *ever* see it that way or understand that they’ve been taken to the cleaners. I mean, if they haven’t figured out *yet* that they’ve been conned, what makes *any* of us think there will *finally* be a “turning point”?
On my social media accounts, I have a few “right-of-center” friends and we see things in much the same way, which I must admit I find very fascinating. I think that’s because they are more what I’d call “traditional conservatives”, and we can more easily accept each other’s viewpoints. However, many of these RoC friends have MAGA friends and family members, so I see a fair amount of their way of thinking about what we’re all seeing.
They, quite mistakenly, think that “Everything’s wonderful!” and “Trump’s getting things done!”, even though it’s all illegal and will be stopped by the courts before *anything* of substance occurs (yes, there is the question of who will enforce the court rulings if Trump chooses to ignore them, but that’s for another time…). They simply can’t (or maybe *won’t*) see that even though MAGA holds the White House, Senate, and House, Trump can’t get ANYTHING passed into law, ie the legitimate way to exercise power per the Constitution, and is trying to rule by proclaiming one lame Executive Order after another.
I’m quite sure that whomever Trump, Vance, Musk, etc. blames for the ongoing problems we as Americans *continue* to experience (like prices still being higher right now, eggs being unavailable, etc), his Cult Members will just suck it up and believe what they’re being told, just like the good little Cult Members they are. I see absolutely *nothing* that would make me believe they’ll finally have their “come to Jesus moment” and finally see things as they truly are.
I could not agree with you more. The cult members have invested 8 years into believing everything he says and defending him. They are simply incapable of saying “Gee, I got it wrong for 8 years.” They won’t believe their lying eyes, - it’s all fake news.
Aloha (38 year resident of Hawaii, now on mainland), no Trump doesn't care, but he's already the puppet. those pulling his strings - Miller, Bannon, Musk - they want. this to go on forever - at least their lifetimes.
I've said this time and time again - it's only "welfare" or a "government handout to special interests" when someone else other than me is receiving the money
So, a lot of people think he is tough, in my reality, he is an insecure, loudmouth trying to puff himself up to look bigger to a perceived scary world; energetic ? he has surrogates doing the running while he guzzles Diet Coke on the golf course; focused ? is that another word for his “Weave”, oh please, he can’t keep his mental “train on the tracks” - yes, I am an Old Fart 😉; effective ? Yes, at creating chaos that challenges a 2yo on a sugar rush, and destroying our Nation’s reputation for freedom, reliability, justice, and compassion !
One question: Are we/you/them/whomever confusing "tough" with "effective"? Sure, he's mounting a blitzkerig of executive orders and proclamations but only a number of them have stuck. Lots of push back from courts, etc. Sure, a wolf chasing it's tail looks tough, but is it going anywhere? Is he getting anything done–long term–or, as usual, all performance with no substance? Just a thought...
No, Dutch, we won’t have to wait 2 years to know the results. Right now, you have the White House, Senate, and House, but where is the LEGISLATION that will actually change anything on a permanent basis, per the Constitution? If you’re the party in the majority, why can’t you GOVERN for the good of the American people RIGHT NOW?!
Frankly, I think you’re just looking for someone to blame and abdicating all of *your* responsibility for why we’re in this state of lawlessness and lack of actual real change. You’re going to have to take responsibility for your vote *someday*…..
While I may disagree on much of what he does, the main reason I think he's popular with his base is that he actually tries to do things rather than list a million reasons why we can't do it. He actually tries to fulfill his campaign promises even if I might think they're silly or wrong. Basically because he's the anti-politician (the reason for those AOC/Trump voters).
Yep, he's kept those promises. Ending the war in Ukraine on day one. Immediately lowered prices. Amended the Constitution by Executive Order. Hiring people purely on merit.
Please. He is purely performative. He's putting on a show, not fulfilling campaign promises.
Don't forget Project 2025. He never heard of it! Yet he has followed it step by step and nominated its author, Russell Vought, as his budget chief (who got confirmed).
Possibly his biggest lie to date. But will those who believed him and voted for him ever acknowledge that they were conned, even as they watch his administration destroy the country according to that playbook? I doubt it.
Frankly I can’t stand the narcissist! Tough, no just behaving like a dictator and not doing what ever he wants no matter who he hurts . Taking peoples hard earned Social Security that they earned over the course of their working lives. He’s a HORROR! His supporters are the same type of people who supported Hitler. Despicable haters.
Maybe you mean 49% of the voters.....far from half of the country.....remember, not ever eligible voter, voted....he is far from having a mandate from the country.
Yes, like the rest of his MAGA Cult friends, Dutch can’t seem to rap his head around the ACTUAL numbers from the election. More eligible voters chose NOT to vote (roughly 36%) than chose to vote for either Trump (around 31.5% of eligible voters) or Harris (30%) or an independent candidate (1%).
And even though they now have the WH, Senate, & House, as Dutch *loves* to point out, they can’t seem to find a way to actually govern. You know, as the Constitution intended, ie House and Senate pass a bill and send it to the President to sign?
Everything else he posts is just bluster, intended to obfuscate and obscure what’s actually happening, ie ZERO of substance!
Folks love DonOld because he allows them to hate. Openly. It's about the hatred and the retribution.
They hate the gays and the trans folks. But for years, it wasn't allowed to say that. Chicks with dicks are the worst. He's mocking them openly.
They hate the "special" treatment the blacks get. Damn blacks have their own colleges and get extra special treatment in hiring and them fuckers are lazy bastards and they don't work hard and everywhere they live is a mess and they have strange music and wear shower caps and they just ain't that smart. But DonOld says it right out loud. Finally they are getting to the back of the line where they belong.
Don't get me started on women. You know they get that "thing" every month. They get all emotional and aren't born to be leaders. Heck, even a bunch of women know their place. It's to cook, clean, reproduce and service their man. Finally someone is saying it out loud. We love him for that!
What was so bad about the Confederate flag and naming bases after Civil War heroes. They were just fighting against the blacks. None of this crap would have happened if the blacks knew their place. Can you believe one of them had the nerve to run for President. That fucker sat in the same desk as me. But just so you know, I had all the toilets in the White House changed when I moved in. My fat white ass ain't sitting on the same crapper as that n...Oh boy, I can't say that word.
You know all that crap about the price of eggs? HAHHAHHAHA You guys in the press bought it. We don't give a crap about eggs. That was just funny stuff we said so it didn't look like we hated the blacks and the gays and the JEWS!
Oh, the Jews, where do I start. You know those hooked nose muthas are trying to rule your country. He's bringing back CHRISTIAN VALUES to Amerika. No more of the crazy Jew stuff. And if you say anything about me not liking the Jews, just look at Jared. See, I got a token Jew on my side. But that's enough Jews for him. Oh, I like Bibi, but maybe he's not so Jewish after all.
Correct. The election had nothing to do with the price of eggs and gas. That was the excuse of 70+ million voters and especially the non-voters who voted for the couch as POTUS. It was about being scared simple-minded bigots, racists, sexists, etc. And now we are all paying the price of having the 250-year-old experiment shot to hell.
It is especially frustrating to see members of the media and so many people excuse his behavior with one simple explanation. "Well, a lot of people voted for him."
That certainly is not an excuse. I don't think any of us believe that the election was rigged. He won fair and square. But the fact that exposing that America is, at its core, the racist country. It is always been, does not make it right.
It is disappointing to see so many good journalist like Chris excuse the behavior with polls and charts that say he is still popular. I believe that Hitler was also very popular at the beginning of his reign of terror.
That's the problem. I'm watching MSNBC and they are mentioning a YouGov poll that says 53% approve of what Trump is doing (70% say "he's doing what he promised", and I guess he is). For Trump, that is enormous, and I'm surprised Cillizza didn't mention the poll (yet).
Trump is popular with his deportation plans, and somewhat with China tariffs, but not so much with other stuff. I think March 14th is when the government funding deadline happens, but really other than that, Dems can't do a whole lot about this guy. We just have to hope it doesn't get too bad, our country I mean.
Why would we believe a poll? Most polls are spectacularly inaccurate. Trump is a danger to himself and others, “energy” and “toughness” and everything else notwithstanding. If you can project such things but use them to destructive ends, let’s not hype that as anything good.
Exactly. It is a head scratcher for sure. From what I hear, the senate is getting around 1600 calls per minute (at the 24 hr rate that is ALOT of calls: 1440x1600!) People are not calling because they are happy with what's going on. Someone with access needs to do a deep dive on this
Meanwhile on Air Force One on his way home from the Super Bowl, he so badly misunderstood and mangled the difference between payments made by the Department of Treasury and Treasury Bonds that he almost sent global financial markets into a tailspin by suggesting that the US might not repay Treasury Bonds. He’s globally dangerous.
um ... being energetic with all those executive orders? haha. You think he's thinking through all the policy, meeting with advisors, and writing all those EOs? lol He just shows up for the photo op to sign them.
(Response to: "The Musk Deputy Running DOGE’s Huge Cost-Cutting Drive" WSJ)
Ah, Steve Davis, the man who once revolutionized the frozen yogurt industry with discounts for singing Mr. Roboto and is now revolutionizing the U.S. government by treating it like a delinquent tenant skipping out on rent. Who better to lead the charge on efficiency than a guy whose strategy for cost-cutting at Twitter involved simply not paying bills?
But let’s be fair—if Armageddon could inspire him to get into engineering, perhaps Fight Club is now guiding his approach to governance: "The first rule of DOGE is we don’t follow the rules of government." Why waste time on pesky congressional appropriations, legal oversight, or, you know, basic legality when you can just bulldoze ahead with Musk’s signature move fast and break democracy method?
And let’s not forget the philosophy behind it all—Ayn Rand, of course! Because nothing says government efficiency like dismantling the government entirely, except when you need taxpayer-funded subsidies for rockets, self-driving cars, and multi-billion-dollar tunnel projects that functionally move fewer people than a public bus.
No, Mr. Davis, this isn’t a movie. It’s not Armageddon or The Rock—though it might be Idiocracy. You’re not Bruce Willis saving the planet. You’re just a billionaire’s yes-man playing demolition derby with America’s institutions. And thankfully, at least one federal judge has realized that maybe, just maybe, gutting congressional mandates isn’t the same as cutting janitorial costs at a Twitter office.
Trump is a gattling gun of bluster and pseudo-ideas but nothing meaningful is actually happening. It is all about perception. The same goes re his "tough" rep. It is all an illusion, carefully crafted to dupe the MAGA horde.
Trump is a poor person's idea of what a rich man is, a weak person's idea of what a strong man is, and a dumb person's idea of what a smart man is.
Love that Joe!
That continued thinking and the Dems will never win another election! Only thing better is if you wrote that in all caps ( he he he )
None of the people I've truly admired in my life had toughness (in Trump's case, asshole-edness) as their most salient characteristic. He's a "fake" tough guy. I recall the time he retreated to his White House bunker and then denied that he had gone there.
😂
OMG DUTCH IS LAUGHING!!! How do we take that
So, a lot of people think he is tough, in my reality, he is an insecure, loudmouth trying to puff himself up to look bigger to a perceived scary world; energetic ? he has surrogates doing the running while he guzzles Diet Coke on the golf course; focused ? is that another word for his “Weave”, oh please, he can’t keep his mental “train on the tracks” - yes, I am an Old Fart 😉; effective ? We will know at the midterms!
No, Dutch, we won’t have to wait 2 years to know the results. The ones who voted for him will say they were conned when he starts conning them. For example the farmers.
Sad thing is that he will hurt all of us if he makes good on all of his promises and quite possibly take down our economy and democracy with it.
He’s not tough he’s cruel. The disconnect here is that a majority of people have either poor judgement or are just plain cruel themselves.
Frankly I can’t stand the narcissist! Tough, no just behaving like a dictator and not doing what ever he wants no matter who he hurts .
