Iowa doesn't matter! Look what happened to the last three winners of the Iowa caucus. None of them won the nomination. W. won Iowa and then got clobbered in New Hampshire.

It's silly that one state gets to have so much weight in picking our leaders when they have such an outdated method of voting and it doesn't even seem to work

Agree completely, Chris. What not only boggles my mind, but sickens me, is that people know the play book and still go along with it. His supporters do not care one bit about the truth, if Trump says it, they believe it. I am sure there are some that got taken in, in 2016, and will not vote for him again. However, he has a large swath of followers who could very easily give him the nomination, then the White House. If the cards are dealt the right way, he wins the White House. Yes, it disgusts me what Trump does & says but see who he is and what his playbook is. It will never change and this is all more of a cult than actually voting for the next president of the United States of America. It is a cult to believe him, trust him and have him in power, truth be damned. The country voted him in, in 2016 and perhaps 2024, we will get what we get. It will be horrific, win or lose. Yet, his cult followers will lap it up. It’s like the cult of Manson, so horrific and yet for whatever reason, he had his followers, his family.

The hard truth is, Iowa's population does not resemble the population of the United States, and the choices coming out of Iowa are not usually the choices who end up being nominated to represent their respective party, unless they are running unopposed. While Iowa used to better reflect the mood and the interests of the nation overall, this is no longer true. It is why the Democrats moved their first in the nation primary/caucuses from Iowa to South Carolina.

Truth is, for most of the people in the US, Iowa's choices in their Caucuses do not matter.

Trump:

1. Knows this - why waste too much time and money on a state which will not make a difference;

2. Does not like the small, coffee table chats still preferred by Iowans; and,

3. Is not a "farm" guy

I think this gives him too much credit. Your ending hits the nail on the head. He got pissed because in his mind you are either totally loyal and in his side, or you are the enemy. He's using Reynolds to send a message to everyone else. "If I'll turn on her, why wouldn't I turn on you?"

Also, for him to admit in any way that it would be bad to upset her is impossible for him. No way he acknowledges that anyone, especially a woman, has any kind of power or sway over him, and that he isn't all powerful and inevitable.

Why does a state that is representative of the 1880s United States have any sway in 21st-century politics.

89.1% White

3.7% Black

2.9% Asian

No decernable amount of Hispanics(!!!!)

Can see why this is such a popular place for ReTrumplican'ts, especially electing an 89-year old to a 6-year term in the Senate.

I get what you are saying about Iowa, and if he loses, he plays the victim card. But, can he carry that through all the way to the convention? What if he says he didn't lose in a New Jersey or Florida primary but they were stolen from him? Does this strategy work for the entire campaign season? Yes, this assumes that some other candidate will truly challenge him in the primary voters minds.

I saw the headline: "What if Iowa doesn't matter?" and thought, well, gee, lots of us in Wisconsin have felt that way about Iowa for a very long time. And then I read the column and realized Chris was writing about the Iowa GOP caucuses. Alas, mine was an easy mistake to make. Nonetheless, the GOP caucuses won't matter, either, will they? So how come so many politicians & pundits are paying so much attention to Iowa? Click bait in the cornfield, I presume.

In the grand scheme of things, Iowa does not really matter in the nomination process of either the Democrats or the Republicans. President Biden in his wisdom and excellent foresight knew this before anyone else. That's why he( President Biden) moved the first nomination vote to South Carolina. It However took the other side Trump's likely hood of losing Iowa and his bashing of Kim Reynolds(the very popular Governor of Iowa) to realize what Biden already knows.

That's the kind of person you want to have in the White House

Great foresight President Biden

You're exactly right, which is a sad commentary on the Republican base.
