To repeat, a Trump win ends American democracy. Period, full stop. To deny that is to deny reality.

And the Republican Party is 💯 behind him in this.

I agree Ian. There must be some way that he could be stopped!

It might help if Biden stepped aside. Joe has done a great job, but people seem unwilling to accept that he is up to a second term. Note that Haley does better in head to head polls with Biden than Trump does. It's not all people who are devoted to Trump. Some just reject Biden. They shouldn't , but they do

And he will be stopped by Joe Biden just as he kicked him out of the House in 2020

Please stop whistling past the graveyard, Doc. Telling people there is no danger in Trump's campaign, what he cannot possibly win the 2024 election, is in and of itself, dangerous.

If we abandon President Biden and allow a Trump victory in 2024…then we will deserve all of the above. If all Democrats, Independents, and principled Republicans vote blue then we won’t have a problem. The majority in this country does not want a second Trump term in office, so they’d better vote. Let’s stop the infighting, and start fighting.

The problem isn't with the informed voters you reference. The problem is with low information voters who are swayed by memes of Biden looking infirm and by rampant misinformation. I don't know what infighting you see. Ds in power have stood behind Biden. That may turn out to be a mistake.

Expand full comment

It won’t be a mistake. The alternative is Trump. Allowing Trump a second term would be the mistake of mistakes.

Of course, the notion of another Trump term is anathema. My point was Ds' supporting another Biden run may be a mistake. It's not all about Trump. Note that Haley does better in head to head polling with Biden than does Trump. Joe deserves better. He has had a great term. But there is widespread conviction that he is too infirm for another term. I don't think that's a problem any clever campaigning can fix. In contrast, Gretchen Whitmer is dynamic and has shown she can win in a swing state. Isn't it about time for a woman POTUS? There are other potentially strong DEMOCRATIC candidates who have held back out of respect for Joe. That may turn out to be the mistake.

::eye twitch::

I am curious how Biden and Democrats can campaign on this without coming off like Chicken Littles.

It feels like at the end of the day, people don't really care about the Trump craziness, as long as they feel the economy is doing well. He also seems to have gotten a pass for covid, simply because no one wants to think about that time again.

idk, I'm just tired of this.

Sam, don't be so despondent because of what some polls or some talking or writing heads are hoping and pushing down our throats. Trump is not going to win in 2024. Those who are trying to put this thought in our heads and subconsciousNess have some benefits from Trump's win which is not going to happen

I am so, so deathly afraid of nearly all Republicans now. Where have all the honorable GOP members gone? Trump ran them off, I know, but it’s incredibly disheartening - and terrifying.

"... honorable GOP members ..."

Which were they?? I can't think of any.

Trump and his supporters are plotting a dictatorship in broad daylight and an alarming portion of the US population is overjoyed at the prospect. People are increasingly willing to sacrifice American democracy on the altar of Trumpism!

Does anyone know why? It cannot be as simple as "I trust him with the economy over Biden." I've got nothing.

Expand full comment

Well, I wrote my take on it here (see link below). I think it is as you say, more complex than simply trusting him with the economy and is instead more closely tied to a mistaken belief that Trump can reverse the direction of the global economy and globalization itself.

Counting all the votes of eligible voters, and not allowing bureaucrats to make them up, is democracy. Refusing to have a primary in the Democratic Party and coronating Joe Biden, like you did Hillary Clinton, is not democracy.

It is very clear: A Trump victory next year means that the U.S. will become no different from Nazi Germany or Putinist/Stalinist Russia (with the FBI being Trump's Gestapo/KGB). This is what Republicans stand for today. If you are not scared, you should be.

The reporting on Trump's inchoate plans are frightening , but not surprising. Of course, even if Trump wanted credible people in a new admin, no one of any sense or integrity would sign up. The Cohens, Kellys, Tillersons of the world signed up last time based on the false promise that Trump would behave in accordance with the office. No one can have any such illusions this time. Many blame Trump exclusively for the mess the GOP has become. But just consider what it says about our country that Trump has even a remote chance of re-election, much less the strong chance the polls indicate. Have people not seen enough of this know-nothing , malignant narcissist to reject him? This is all a product of an undereducated population and the toxic media it consumes.

Expand full comment

You are so right about the fact that it takes votes from the electorate to allow him all of this unchecked power. The media surely has helped get us to where we are now, but I've said this from day one that the majority of the blame for the mess we find ourselves in falls on the senior senator from KY. All he had to do was go into the oval office on 1/21/2017 and read that bozo the riot act, telling him that if he doesn't act presidential, he'll invoke the 25th so fast his head will spin. But he sold out democracy for far right judges and here we are. I realize it's not as simple as that, but at that point McConnell had he power to do something and chose not to.

This is true of a lot of Republican elected officials.

Maddeningly, heartbreakingly true. Even though I don't think I've ever agreed with a Republican policy, we could at least depend on the GOP to put country before party. And certainly put country before dictatorship.

No matter how bad anyone thinks it will be if that guy gets back into the WH, the reality will be 100 times worse. Maybe 1000 times worse. He will incorporate all of the tactics employed by all the evil dictators. As BTO said, "you ain't seen nothing yet."

And this is precisely why my wife and I are looking to leave the country if Trump gets back into office. It is going to be an absolute sh*tshow. What's to stop him from looking into everyone's social media accounts and putting anyone in prison who has ever said anything negative about him? And believe me, we have!!

Same. My wife is from New Zealand. I'm out if Trump wins. Gone.

It sickens me to think that Trump can possibly be in the White House again. The country will become a complete disaster, over the cliff and democracy will end. What is wrong with people that they are so taken by this cult and will follow Trump to the ends of the earth? The complete disrespect in the courtroom today was a complete disgrace and that is nothing compared to what this country will be see with Trump in the Oval Office. I am really afraid as to what may be coming. We need to get out the vote and vote blue, that’s the best we can do.

That's what we should be discussing now ,( Trump's disgraceful and disrespectful performance in the court today) and not his wishful thinking of getting back to the White House. The last time I checked, the cloud over the White House is clear and bright. There is and will not be dark clouds over the White House because Trump will never be back in the House again. I know some people would not like that but that's the truth sir

One word describes the possibility in 2024..... frightening. GOPers may bitch about economy now; if Drump is reelected, they will feel true impact of crashing economy.

Amazing people think TFG is so wonderful...despite him making a fool of himself on national TV and at public rallys. The man is barely coherent; his sole policy statement appears to revolve around revenge, directed at anyone who said a discouraging word about him.

God help us.

What is truly scary is that self-professed "real" MAGA patriots step beyond the pale of normalcy and see that "putting to the Libs" is more important than preserving the country.

The paranoid white Americans are terrified that their pathetic lives will change for the worse by having to share their country with the "others".

Damn...they don't realize that shooting up pumpkins with AK-15s and "coloreds" will still be legal.

As the eternal optimist, I am convinced that Trump in the courts will destroy Trump on the campaign trail. I also believe, perhaps because I must for the sake of sanity, that a significant majority of Americans will recognize that the Biden Administration has done a marvelous job of pulling us back from the brink and restoring our decency and leadership in the world.

Having said all of that, I am again having a discussion with my broker in the firm expectation that a Trump election would mean a Wall Street disaster.

If the republicans take the senate, they will continue to do nothing. It looks like democrats till take back the house but at this point, it looks like we lose the Senate. So, Trump will be able to do whatever he wants without being held accountable. It’s awful.
