We can never forget that Donald J Trump consistently rises from perceived defeat like a cockroach after fumigation. He will do literally anything to regain the White House, and we ignore that at our peril. We must vote in numbers that will make his claims of a rigged election simply an absurdity. Taking a premature victory lap is not useful. That said, there was a certain sweetness in last nights beatdown of Donald J Trump. He is down. He is never, never out.
Last night, we all witnessed a pathetic ,weak, and embarrassing performance by a sorry excuse for a man. The fact that a sad creature such as Trump could still be considered presidential material by 60+ million americans is a humiliation we as US citizens will have to endure for the rest of our lives. Shame on us.
I've added one person to the voting numbers; he is voting in his first presidential election. It's time to work the phones, canvas, register, etc. To make Trump somewhat go away is for him to lose. We can get to 81+ million and fire him again.
Chris is correct that this debate will do nothing (except in my opinion motivate more Democrats to register and vote). The challenge is to get 90 million plus votes. Biden got 82 million with no enthusiasm behind him. She has enthusiasm plus the same motivation Bidenโs 2020 voters had to get rid of Trump. Democrats win with an expanded Democratic electorate, pure and simple.
I agree with Chris. Donโt count those chickens just yet. T has survived and prospered through events, rhetoric and an abysmal performance as president. Yet here he is, in a dead heat. ๐คฅ after๐คฅ. Felony convictions. Found libel for rape and defamation. Insurrection. The Teflon stays in tact. Kamala will have to fight for every vote. I pray she triumphs.
First, obviously, it's not over 'till it's over, and one should never underestimate Donald Trump. It's happened in three straight elections and he's always out-done expectations.
However ... Trump has always had a pretty firm ceiling. And after the debate, that ceiling (I'm guessing) got a little lower. We don't know what Harris' ceiling is, but I'm guessing it just got a little higher.
The question is: what's going to attract more voters to the Trump campaign? Barring an unexpected event, last night was his one big chance to make his case.
Celebrity fades. Trump has been in our faces for ten years now. A big part of his appeal is calling himself a "winner." Last night, he was a clear loser. And even right-wing love affairs fade. Who cares about Sarah Palin now? Or even Tucker Carlson?
Harris' campaign just had its second kick-off. I think she'll be doing lots of interviews and campaign appearances. Trump will only talk to Fox.
Some Americans have this rosy view of the Trump years, except for COVID. First of all, Presidents are judged by how they handle crises. Second, even before COVID, there was a lot of chaos and mismanagement. I found it a very scary unsettling time. The Harris people need to remind people of that.
For the MAGA world, Trump hit all the right talking points. None of what he said will move the 47-48% of his base that are all in on his word salad craziness. The question is. did Harris make her case for the 5-8% undecideds across seven states that will choose the next President.
Spin and talking points aside, at this stage no one knows...
the piece, the Falling Man, by Junod. Well, it eclipses anything i might say about the debate. That such a horrific event could produce such a magnificent piece of writing, i am silenced.. i want to just sit with this.
Chris-consider that like any team that competes in a sport, Trump will inevitably lose. Actually he already has lost in 2020 but what you are really saying is that he canโt be killed (no pun intended). But maybe his luck is about to run out, and if it does, it will be because last night Kamala punctured his veneer of invulnerability in a way that showed her as the dominant party in the contest. I believe Trumpโs superpower is that because he is impervious to facts and has no shame or conscience, he just plows ahead and appears to be unaffected by adversity, thus appears to be invulnerable. But he is plenty vulnerable and exposed after last night and maybe that means that the 2% you are saying he tacks onto his floor of 46% doesnโt come his way this time. Maybe the fence sitters move off him because after last night that donโt see him as a winner and it gives them permission to not vote for him. Maybe, but it happens to everyone at some point so why not him now?
Seemingly lost in much of the coverage of Trump's disastrous performance is the brilliant showing by Vice-President Harris. That may end up counting for a great deal. The MSM (I won't name names, but they know who they are) has been busy grousing about the lack of Harris interviews, the inadequacy (in some opinions) of Harris' stated positions on issues, the (Gasp! Horrors!) alleged flip-flops. And then she spends 90 minutes in front of 70 million people demonstrating her brilliance and making Trump look like the fool that he assuredly is. That may influence some folks. And those folks may vote. Meanwhile, many of us are left to ponder the fact that we live in a country where Trump can pull a lot of votes. Kinda scary, huh?
The MSM and some Pundits like Chris Cilliza held those views about Harris. And now that Harris ate his lunch, they're frustrated and looking for excuses to explain his abysmal and mediocre performance on the debate stage last night
On the qoute about Taylor Swift. It must have bothered Trump and his MAGA Cult members that Swift endorsed Harris. Remember Trump fraudulently AI generated a Swift endorsement on his FALSE SOCIAL. Swift actually referenced it in her Endorsement note.

It was still fun watching him get his ass kicked.

Yes. 81 million in the right states.

Also, reports are that 300,000 people have registered since Taylor Swiftโs endorsement.
Yes!

A good dose of deflation. A reminder not to count your chickens before they hatch, etc.
Trump and his ilk will be a threat for the foreseeable future.

Totally agree
It isnโt just what people thought of the debate, more to it is what foreign leaders saw with Trumps opponent baiting him into losing control!

I think this should be read every year as a reminder. So sad ๐๐๐
At some point the TV show gets canceled..... I hope this is the season he jumps the shark.

Nice quote JD. Do these guys not hear themselves when they speak?
