Even if the Ds did vote Emmer in (I don't think they should), given the Rs can simply vote him out again immediately with a Motion to Vacate. I don't see the benefit here.
I can't understand the idea that the Rs would be willing to make any deal with the Ds. Emmer by himself can't make a deal ... I guess we'll have to see how many Rs are willing to completely separate themselves from the Party as it appears that that is what it would take to make a deal.
As Chris often says: Wait. What? That Truth [sic] Social quote, purportedly from Trump, was actually coherent. It was nonsense, but contrast it with the 45 wildest lines Chris quoted earlier today from Trump's New Hampshire speech, which were standard Trump rhetorical gobbledegook. If Trump has hired an effective social media communicator, we're all in deep s--t.
At some point the democrats will have to be the adults in the room and vote for a republican speaker. The litmus test is electing a speaker who will pass a budget.
I have finally reached the point in all of this that I really don't know what to think. This old politics watcher is watching in fascination, horror, dismay and amusement. Wow! It took the House Republicans, circa 2023, to bring me to this befuddled state. Remarkably, those House Republicans appear to be even more befuddled than the old politics watcher!
Is there any clearer indication that Republicans do not have any use for elections or democracy than their refusal to abide by the results of their own internal elections? Not even a fig leaf of “fraud” or “rigged” but plain and simple disdain for any result they didn’t vote for.
I think they want to burn the place down. NO candidate will satisfy them. They want chaos and a government shutdown. The only way out is to get the democrats on board to save the country
The United States, as currently constituted, cannot be saved. Let the Republicans precipitate a crisis, and use it as an opportunity to re-constitute the nation--or break it apart.
I do not think that Trump bad mouthing {or better still Bad writing } Emmer necessarily doom his Speakership bid. If anything, it probably helps him {Emmer} among the Democrats as well as among the Republicans in President Biden's districts.
I think we are exaggerating Trump's influence here, after all his endorsed candidate lost his bid for the position and was overwhelmingly told to drop out of the race by his colleagues.
I'm thinking it's time for Democrats to consider your second option and just end this charade.
It is getting BAD.
And Emmer dropped out
They need to get something in return. If they can strike a deal, then he's probably the best that can be hoped for.

What if as part of the deal, Emmer increases the motion to vacate.

Agreed. But it sounds like Emmer is the best they are gonna get.
Emmer would be wise to talk to some moderate Democrats who might be inclined to be absent in order during the vote to end the stalemate.
Vote this guy in and it weakens the Rs, instantly. It will be fun to watch.

Make this madness stop.
if the madness were to stop, it would be like watching network television during a writers strike.
I get the feeling that Chris C is more busy now than at any time while at CNN.
I am pretty busy!
Chris,
Very logical analysis, but poor Emmer didn't even make it to today's closing bell on the New York Stock Exchange!
How embarrassing that he had to grovel before the Criminal-In-Chief, and then received seven less votes than Gym Pedo-Protector Jordan.
Now is ready to resume his duties as the GOP Whip. Sure showed his credentials for that role!!🤣

I can’t believe Emmer has dropped out!
Don’t they care about the mess they are creating?
I am truly beginning to believe that Trump et Al are really a bunch of Fascists waiting to pounce on our Democracy and shred it to pieces!!
And I think you’re right, you’re very well maybe they wanna break the country apart
Hmmm, that was fast. He already dropped out...
The Elise Stefanik congrats speaker designate tweets have to be a rib at this point right?
