Chris, do you have any polling data that indicates that the Republican base finds this situation untenable? My sense from listening to the occasional nutjob that gets interviewed regarding their assessment of their congress person's actions in this episode ... is that they LOVE IT. What can possibly go wrong if they keep this up?! thanks
There is a significant minority in this country who actually believe that ANY government is bad...used to be that libertarians were kinda this way, but it sure seems like most MAGAts are either "no government is good government" or "if you don't want my tin-pot dictator, then I will do whatever it takes to make sure there's no government." And they are actually serious.
Sad part is, I think even in the GOP, they are a roundly despised minority. But if so-called "normies" Republicans keep saying things like "The one thing I will NEVER do is vote for a Democrat," this could go on for a long time.
I look at it this way: How can anyone take seriously a party that has 199 members of the House who are willing to support as Speaker a seditious, ethically-challenged, performative individual such as Jim Jordan?
Trump the chaos agent as one of them called him recently cannot lead them out the this crIsis. And even if he could would not do it because there's nothing for him to gain personally in it. Sad isn't it ? And this is who some people are openly and secretly hoping to lead this great Country. Just a side bar, president Biden is going a great job both around home and internationally. If you watched him address the MiddleEasterners today, you would be proud of him even if you don't like or support him.
Trump, as the head of the Republican Party should be guiding/leading his party out of this mess but shows no inclination to put in the work. Instead, he generally just exacerbates the problems while offering nothing remotely identified as leadership. Chris, what a mess!
So most house Republicans hate the idea of sharing power with Democrats? Reminds me of Paul Ryan’s explicit statements in 2017 that he “did not want to work with democrats” on their healthcare and tax legislation. Sad. The two parties’ legislative priorities are so far apart now that it’s like half the family wants to vacation at the North Pole, the other half at the South Pole, and both agree the equator is an unacceptable compromise (oh, and the constitution requires the whole family vacation together). SIGH
The whole idea of Jordan as speaker was to have a congress that was in constant dysfunction and nothing happening. This is the same as what we now have. So far the plan is working. This began with the MAGA getting rid of McCarthy and they are winning for now. Government in chaos.
If I could only bring myself to believe that will happen. But something equally as bad will take their place: with or without Trump, and with or without the Republican Party, we’re not getting this MAGA genie back in the bottle...
This is entirely the fault of the Democrats in the House! The Deep State and Angry Left refuse to bend to the will of the far-right, MAGA-inspired House membership! As long as the Left remains uncooperative the House will be closed for business. The Dems are denying the will of the people!!
Democrats have a unique opportunity here, if they’ll take it. Surely in the Republican Conference there exists a small minority who despise Trump and MAGA, and who would be willing to serve, backed by the Democratic conference who could negotiate for some sane legislative activity. If Leader Hakeem Jeffries could put together such a coalition, it would be extraordinarily helpful to the American people and to the Biden administration.
Jeffries has extended his hand publicly and repeatedly. It's going to take a group of GOPhers willing to risk re-election to reach out to him and cut a deal.
Yep, the Dems need a group of rational Republicans to cross the aisle.
But that isn't going to happen, as it would be career suicide (and potentially harmful to their family, the nutters in the MAGA-sphere are not just keyboard warriors)
Every day weighs heavily, as the House Speaker remains undecided. Strategy and drama will intensify daily. I am in complete agreement with you, the most reasonable scenario going forward is a McHenry elevation and extension, until the Repub's can come to some sort of consensus, or until the 2024 election, whichever comes first.
What a cluster. I'm afraid this is a hole that can't be fixed with this current bunch of players. Will it change between now and election. Doubtful at best. Can USA stand til then.....a terrifying thought. Where's a white night when we could use em? Oh yeah they are black nights at moment. Sad.
2nd failed ballot for Jordan loses him 4 votes; flipped 1, picked up an absentee, net lost 2 for 22 NOs, but he could only lose 4 to prevail. Jordan & Rep. Chip Roy, bane of McCarthy's 1st 13 to 14 failed Speaker ballots in Jan. both announced they'd persist trying to pressure & flip votes. Among the NOs are the Approps. Chair and 3 Cardinals (4) + 6/18 GOPers from dustricts rhat Biden won in 2020. The House GOP majority inertia points toward reaching the precipice of the 11/17 deadline for Congress to approve a CR for discretionary spending. If not, on 11/18, Active Duty military personnel, all DOD civilians, all Intel. Agency employees, all law enforcement officers, including for Border Security & Immigration enforcement will be forced to work without paychecks during the week of Thanksgiving. 17% of voters in a new poll said they're paying attention to the Speaker vacancy and negative impressions about GOP are increasing while views about Democrats are stable. Both are abysmal. So will Murdoch, Steve Bannon. Trump and the other Powers That Be among the Far Right info. silos that feed Trump's base voters persist in driving House GOPers unto the box canyon of a USA federal govt. shutdown while POTUS Biden FIGHTS to provide stalwart support for Israel's righteous retribution against Hamas? Stay tuned.
Yeah…Brian Fitzpatrick of PA’s first district - the Republican co-leader of the grotesquely misnamed “problem solver’s caucus”. Good luck with that - see my separate comment below re: most Republicans hating the idea of sharing power with Dems
Chaos is what they want, chaos is what they got. It is all a shit show and will continue to be. They are all spineless and it’s party, power, money over country.
Who could have guessed when Trump endorsed Jordan that it would turn into a dumpster fire?

This matches many of the discussions I overhear among the MAGA folks I work with. They are eating this up.
Everything is so gerrymandered anyway that it won't impact their election races.

The Republicans were the Phoenix that rose out of the ruins of the Whigs. Now we are watching them go the way of the Whigs.

I sadly agree.

Clearly, this is all because of Obama preferring Grey Poupon mustard, and his wearing of the tan suit in the Oval Office /s
Thanks, Obama!
😂
Don’t forget the arugula. The man was a monster.
Oh, the humanity
The crux of the matter is that more than four House Republicans WANT the dysfunction. (In fact quite a few more than four).

What about four swing Republicans (Bacon, the NYers) working with Jeffries to find a Democrat they could elevate who is moderate?
