I have a question about the border. The GOP would have us believe that the Democrats have the equivalent of Walmart greeters welcoming migrants across the border. I assume that isn’t the case, but it feels like the Democrats, Biden, never talk about what they ARE doing. Wouldn’t a more vocal approach at least counter that a little bit? I know there are no easy answers to this, but at least try to fight back in the messaging.

I think that if Donald Trump would have faded away after 2020 and was not running for president in 2024, that Joe Biden would have been very content to be a one-term President and retire. But since Trump is still around and running again, I feel that Biden really thinks he is the only one who could beat him again and feels he has an obligation to run. Thoughts?

Will anyone hold Chris Christie accountable for his nasty slam on Jill Biden? CNN asked him about it this morning and he pretended to be surprised that anyone would take issue with it and then slipped in a slam on AOC.

I read with interest your bit about how DJT should not be treated by journalists as a normal candidate. Yet the schoolyard nicknames he delights in are faithfully reported and spread by all media. Why isn’t it time to assign one to him? Charles Pierce has been doing so in all his contributions but it is longish and a Spanish reference. I like “the Lyin’ Don” because it works on several levels but I’m sure there are many other bright minds out there. Over the top? Thin skins need prodding.

Do you have any thoughts on the biggest topic of the week: the rumored relationship between Travis Kelce and T-Swizzle?

Hi Chris- What are your thoughts on any potential impact the recent determination that Trump committed fraud in NY could have? Lawyers already signaled they will appeal. Will this continue to be a drawn out process that dilutes any impact on his wallet, properties, ability to do business, and/or political aspirations? Or is this ruling a significant blow? It's hard to tell these days with all his legal battles. Him saying that this isn't America as a response left me shaking my head.

It seems inevitable that Kevin McCarthy will be ousted as Speaker. Or is it? I am no expert on McCarthy, so my biggest question concerns his power. Does he wind up allying with others in the House? In my view, if McCarthy allows this shutdown to start, he is doomed either way.

I wonder why the convicted persistent fraudster Donald Trump is not participating in the Republican debate to at least tell his fellow Republicans what his plans are for 2024 .

Why are some Democrats asking Senator Menendez to resign when Donald Trump has not only been indicted with 91 felonies , he has been convicted of multiple crimes including the one of today (Trump was convicted of Frauds) and yet this guy is campaigning to be the President of the United States and no one is asking him to quit his campaign. If this is not hypocrisy and I don't know what it is

What are your predictions as to which GOP candidates will make it to the caucus in Iowa? Same question as to primary in New Hampshire?

Chris, I am still pondering the piece you wrote last week about how so many Americans feel negatively about the direction the country is headed. My question is: why do you think so many people have such a dark view of the state of the country right now? I sincerely struggle to understand this phenomenon. I mean, sure, we have problems, but there have always been problems, and it doesn't feel to me like things are unusually worse in recent years. It also seems that there is plenty of good news in the world as well, depending on what people choose to focus on. Do you see people's dark and apocalyptic mood as primarily an effect of social media like Twitter and its echo chamber effect? *Are* things objectively worse? I am puzzled and would appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Chris, what do think of Tucker Carlson as a Trump running mate? A younger, articulate (in his way) addition to carry on the MAGA torch?

Not a question so much as an observation. Perhaps if members of Congress had their pay withheld during a government shutdown they would be a little less cavalier in their willingness to allow a shutdown rather than compromise and actually do their jobs.

I read your story today about Trump saying more and more outlandish things. Do think his supporters are believing more and more equally outlandish things as well?

Every election season I hear a common refrain about the Democratic Party. The word most commonly used is “bedwetters”. That they stress and freak out over their candidate’s prospects. I remember Hillary Clinton saying it’s in the party’s DNA. That seems like a broad stereotype. Republicans don’t stress over their candidates prospects? They have just as much vested interest in succeeding as Dems do. How is the Democratic Party different in this respect.

One of my students (high school U.S. History) recently asked what would happen if the U.S. government stopped paying its debts, and replied it would cause an economic crash, but when they wanted more details (like how long the crash would be, how bad it would get, and what would likely eventually come after that crash) I could only make guesses. Can you help me out with better answers?
