Senator J. D. Vance, today (June 13) indicating, due to his discomfort with the DOJ, he was now, unilaterally going to hold up appointments to the DOJ, similar to Senator Tubberville's stance on DoD promotions. What can we do to help convince our elected officials to not be road blocks to the day-to-day operations of our government? (Full disclosure, I am an Ohio resident...). Thank you
I gave a fuller description of my question as a comment in response to last week's mailbag post. But, to repeat, I'd be interested in your thoughts on ranked-choice voting.
you were always my favorite writer on CNN - and now i am just very glad i found your mailing list. thank you for your continued excellent political commentary. imho, Stephen Collinson is not moderate enough.
I'm sure Republican donors are really scared about a convicted felon being their nominee. They must be concerned about the party's future. I think they would want to see a future beyond DT at one point. Do you suspect their is a break the glass option in case a conviction happens?
Any conviction for Trump at the earliest for any of these charges wouldn't happen until sometime next year and maybe after the primary. My questions are this... what would happen if Trump is convicted and his appeals fail in say August of next year when the primary is over and he's the nominee? Would he still be able to be the GOP nominee and/or would the GOP want him to be the nominee if that happens?
Here’s an interesting and maybe hopeful? thought that I had after reading my mostly curated substack news today... I have realized that I “watch” much less TV (news) because... well honestly there’s TOO MUCH to watch and have changed my consumption to more “readership” than “watcher-ship”. Am I an anomaly (or a creature with habits of “aging” at 66) or do you feel like people are returning to the written word and generally turning their back on “TV” consumption?
My question: Talking heads seem to have been speculating for years (decades?) now about when the “pendulum will swing the other way” and at which time we will see a Republican return to sanity. Yet, from my perspective (a formerly registered Republican), it seems as though the party keeps moving farther and farther to the right, egged on by cheering section in Fox News. To me, it’s too far gone.
With the House gumming up the works in this week and looking to cause trouble, do you think Kevin McCarthy will last a full term as speaker? How much weaker is he post budget vote?
Also, look into your crystal ball please- who comes out of the House with the majority in 2024?
And to everyone who hasn't subscribed yet, you should! Chris' insights are well worth the price, and I've really enjoyed reading your non-political columns. The struggle one really hit home.
So glad there’s still a way to read your thoughtful insights - well worth the subscription price!
Do you think either political party will ever have an interest in appealing to Moderate voters? I’m an Independent but am finding it increasingly hard to feel comfortable with either party’s policies.
Dear Chris: I"m a center right independent who wishes for the return of Reagan-bush style conservatism. I hope there is a party that espouses that view one day.
Of Trump's two current court cases, the Florida one seems much more significant. I think a lot of independents and even some democrats do not think hush money to a porn star is a big deal, but taking classified documents and lying about having them should have serious consequences. Do you think Jack Smith should try to have the Florida trial before the New York one?
Many people are handwringing about the most recent Trump Trial's judge, whose bias toward Trump during the discovery phase of this investigation that she was bludgeoned by the Appeals Court.
That said, do you think that the revelations that will come out during the trial could still be influential in the court of public opinion regardless of the potential derailment of the trial by Judge Cannon?
Question for Friday:

The guy will be holding DOJ and the Country to Ransome just because of one man. Sad

Hey Chris! What do you make of the Tucker vs. FOX feud. Are there clauses in media contracts that limit an individual after severance?

As a paid subscriber, I support this.

How do you see it?

Chris, what do you think about Chris Christie's CNN Town Hall questions and answers and his frank observations of Donald Trump on Monday
Chris,
Many people are handwringing about the most recent Trump Trial's judge, whose bias toward Trump during the discovery phase of this investigation that she was bludgeoned by the Appeals Court.
That said, do you think that the revelations that will come out during the trial could still be influential in the court of public opinion regardless of the potential derailment of the trial by Judge Cannon?
