I’m kind of surprised that so many commentators are already declaring the Republican nomination race over. There is a lot of time left and a lot of that time seems likely to be filled with more and more seriously indictments of Trump and others in his senior circle.

Trump is increasingly unhinged and the stress of actually being held accountable for the first time in his life is likely to have significant consequences, person and political.

He could break down mentally, physically, and/or emotionally.

He could be found to have done something really really seditious.

With Trump, things will always sooner or later go sideways. Which is why some smart or at least opportunistic Republican(s) would do well to keep their sneakers handy.

Pompeo seems like a truly horrible person. He won’t be missed. Mostly because it’s truly horrible people all the way down.

"Pompeo’s exit proves one thing: He at least believes the Republican nomination fight is all but over."

And he's right.........................

RE: "I have made a decision. [We] have prayerfully come to the conclusion we are not going to join the race in 2024."

With the term an INDIVIDUAL politician refers to "WE" --- who the hell are they referring to? Do they have a mouse in their pocket when making that ridiculous statement???

Probably the “we” is inclusive of his spouse.

Sure, but if Pompeo said that, I'd be okay with the pronoun use.

And certainly, Mannequin Mike and Mother are a combo that deserves the "We".

BTW - Here's a clip from when Mannequin Mike was in a "rock" band and sang a song for "Mother" with some rather provocative innuendo.

This reminds me very much of 1992 when many of the Democratic heavyweights, Scoop Jackson, Sam Nunn, saw George Bush as unbeatable because of his success in the Gulf War. An ambitious youngster named Bill Clinton took a flyer and guess what - he became President.

As you say, a lot can happen. It may come down to whoever’s still in the field when Trump crashes and burns. Hello, President Haley.

I think it would be a unfair to the Republicans and probably the nation to say the Republican primary contest is over even before it starts based on just polls. I look forward to a keen contest of ideas and policies within the Republican party during the primary debates. It's important to know where each candidate stand on important issues like abortion , Medicare Ukraine etc.

I feel bad for him. Imagine losing all that weight for nothing

It is really difficult to believe that "the Republican nomination is Trump’s to lose — and that he’s very unlikely to lose it" with all of the legal problems hanging over his head. I am frequently amazed by the GOP willingness to shoot itself in painful body parts but, whoo boy, Trump in 2024 sounds like warranted disaster for the Republicans.

Maybe. But also could be that he sees it as a two-horse race and that only DeSantis is in a position to beat Trump. Pompeo’s numbers indicated not just that he couldn’t beat Trump but he faced humiliation, which would severely damage his chances of a future run. It’s way too early to declare the Republican nomination to be in the bag for Trump - as much as most Democrats are desperate for that to be true.

Not declaring it in the bag for Trump! Just that he is the clear favorite right now!

Of course as long as Trump is not dead, he ALWAYS was going to be the favorite to win the 2024 GOP nomination. The Trump Cult is strong and is THE GOP base.

Same with the full Republican caucus in Congress who do not DARE cross him. If they offer only lukewarm kinda, sorta light criticism, they are punished. Thoroughly and completely.

So wacky right wingers like Annie Coulter have taken up the absurd idea that THE reason that Alvin Bragg indicted Trump was to help him win the nomination and the Dems are “rolling Republican voters” as they hatch their nefarious plan.

Even the venerable conservative National Review is touting the same theory....

https://www.nationalreview.com/2023/04/gop-beware-braggs-case-is-just-the-start-of-trumps-legal-jeopardy/

Yep...the reason that the Republican Party is saddled with this corrupt, delusional con man who is obviously deeply mentally unbalanced is the DEMOCRATS!!!!

NO WAY that prosecutors are concerned with the rule of law in finally nailing this life long crime boss. It’s just a cynical plan to help poor old Joe Biden win.

It remains to be seen if the multiple criminal indictments to come will change the direction of the GOP race, but as Trump predicted accurately seven years ago in Jan, 2016...

“I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I would’s lose any voters, OK?”

You are reaping what you sowed Republicans. A criminal who boasted that his criminal activity, no matter what, would not lose him his cult.

Blaming the Democrats will not pass the laugh test.

Trump owns the GOP base, which Rush, Newt, Fox and others groomed for someone exactly like Trump. And, Trump will destroy us if he gets power again.

That may be Pompeo's calculus, but I still believe it 's not necessarily correct. Having just seen Trump's and DiSantis's super PAC ads, I see it becoming more likely they beat each other up so badly that it leaves an opening for someone else to walk through to the nomination. I hope this is not wishful thinking.
