I, for one, am glad your employment position changed. It allowed you to reach your potential as an opinion writer. Subscribing to your newsletter was money well spent
I have been “let go” 3 times. Once for job elimination (banks know exactly how to do it), once because I did my job very well ( a 5 year project was done in 2)and once due to a buyout. The last when I was 56. As anyone who has lost a job knows it is devastating. You feel adrift. Most of us spend more time with their work “family” than their real family. You have no where to go. You get up every day to scan for possible jobs and posting your resume. It was ridiculously hard to be the interviewee and not the other way around. At 56 I was an anachronism. Salt and pepper hair, dressed for business, I was being interviewed by people who could be my grandchildren. But I survived. But I am a believer that God puts us where we need to be. I am happily retired now and cook and bake for my friends I’ve been able to volunteer and help out my dear neighbor friends when they needed it. Life is good.
PS: I am a childless dog lady. And the idea that I am miserable with no real stake in the future of our country is not only hogwash, but highly insulting.
YEAH on that last point, Lucy, and YAY on your life story! The 18-29 year olds (without children) have the MOST at stake in the future…they’ll have to live the next 70 years of climate disaster and national debt - and have expressed those concerns in political groups like Voters of Tomorrow. How come DJT and JDV and Tucker C don’t care about THOSE issues?
I believe his fat cat contributors created their fortunes based industries that continue to destroy our planet. Don’t forget the HUGE tax cuts he made to those very people which of course sent the national debt soaring. He hasn’t acknowledged the scientists that created the vaccine, nor hordes of volunteers who helped get shots in arms, because in his mind Covid was blown out of proportion. He will never have a platform. He listens to his circle of sycophants and what ever sound bites sound “sexy” that is what he goes with. And thanks for the acknowledgment!
I’m a media person.Laid out 4x! Mortgage crisis in 07, Recession 09, merger 16, Covid 2020 ! Not a drunk, harasser or hard to get around with! I think the last generation of the yuppies has really been hit hard !
Hang in there Lucy!! Not to be Topper from Dilbert, but:
1. I have been laid off 4x in the last 9 years
2. I have been laid off 2x by the SAME company
3. I have been laid off 2x reporting to the same manager at different companies
4. I have been laid off 3x due to a new CEO taking charge (like a dog urinating on a fire hydrant, new CEOs feel compelled to make their mark by increasing earnings through layoffs)
5. Most recently, I was laid off when - after nearly 4 years of working remotely - I was told that I could either work at a desk 300 miles from my home, or I could leave the company.
All this is to say that you - and millions of others - are not alone.
My wife and I enjoy watching live hockey, but we don’t know the rules of the game at all. Sometimes we watch with a friend who knows the sport and explains everything to us. It’s amazing how much clearer the game is when you understand how it works. You’re my hockey friend, but for politics.
Chris, I am enjoying your writing and find your thoughts interesting. I may not always agree with you, but that’s fine. It doesn’t matter as if we all thought the same thing, things would be boring. I have been a subscriber and will continue to be. I have subscribed to your YouTube channel as well and enjoy that. Keep doing what you are doing. Some people just like to stir the pot, would rather attack than discuss or just are argumentative by nature. Thank you for all you do!
I was part of a mass layoff a couple of decades ago. Most of the people I worked with were younger than me. One Friday, an all-hands-on-deck Townhall was called for the following Monday.
I told my bosses that I couldn’t go because I had committed to a charity golf tournament on the Monday. The big boss asked me into his office, trying to get me to change my plans. It was then I knew the jig was up.
I commuted with a couple of people from the office to and from Toronto, about a 45 minute drive. Driving home that Friday, I told them we were getting fired that Monday. They were like, we’re probably just getting our bonuses cut.
Nope, I said, we’re getting fired.
That Monday, I’m on the back nine, a few beers in me, when I get a call from one of the two saying, you were right. We’re done.
To this day, it feels good to know I had the wisdom to understand the situation unfolding in front of me.
But it still sucked.
Never, ever, make fun of someone because they’ve been laid off or fired. It’s really bad karma.
Chris, I’d never wish a negative experience on you… but I share am thankful for the end result of that layoff. Your writing is a highlight of most of my days. Keep charging.
And we are all stronger because of you, after reading this. Continuous improvement! Thanks again for all the insights. Keep pushing that needle, Chris, some people need the encouragement to think on their own more than “they” even know. Regards.
You are my favorite political journalist. I hate this comment about you so very much - I’ve decided to upgrade to being a paid subscriber. Keep up the great work!!
I will always stand up for you because I truly believe you tell it like it is! I don't always agree but I respect what you write. I know you know that there always be people who spew hate no matter what you write but I am so grateful for the fact you don't shy away from it.
Thank you for staying engaged and staying independent!
I really wish you wouldn't let that circumstance bother you. One, letting the jackasses get to you means they win. Two, I've been laid off. Never bothered me simply because the jobs never defined me. It sucked, yes, because I had to go find another way to keep the lights on, but otherwise ... . I really love this newsletter.
It's been interesting to observe this negative trend. I couldn't help but note the contrast of our coarse political discourse and the respectful, civil behavior I witnessed in watching the recent British election results and associated commentary. We have taken a nasty, hateful turn here, which favors vulgarity and insults over thoughtful discourse. I must confess I sometimes have to rethink my posts before officially recording them. Social media has facilitated this, but everyone has social media. COVID isolation fed this, but everyone experienced COVID. What other countries don't have is Donald Trump. It may sound facile and simplistic but the destructive venom this man has unleashed is immeasurable. Hang in there, Chris. We wouldn't be reading if we didn't value what you have to say.
I think this is absolutely true. Trolling existed long before Trump, but he made it okay to not only say the quiet part out loud but to do so in the most elementary playground level possible. I may not have agreed with old school Republicans on policy issues, but they were at least generally polite people. Trump has pulled us down into the mud with him. It sucks.

Was, indeed. And, still is. The 1/3rd "middle" of the electorate is hard to gage. And, it was those "independent" voters that surprised with their exit interviews back in 2016. We kinda know where the #GOPs and #DEMs stand. But, those 100 million "independents"? A lot of 'em just stay at home and do not vote.
Yes, but with extreme polarization, I think that "independent" percentage is 10-20% max. By registration, Independents are the largest group, but of course many have a distinct party preference despite registration. With GOP and Dem (including their Independent supporters) floors looking to be at about 45%, we're down to 10% of the electorate that's left to convince. That doesn't even address the non-voters. What's present now on the Dem side that was missing before are optimism and enthusiasm. How DO people make their decisions and when? It's all pretty scary.
Simple: People buy "emotionally" and then reconcile their decisions later with logic. Me thinks it is safe to say the #DEMs have nailed the "engage emotionally" card so far. And, assuming no major blunders, either induced by the competition or not, over the next (100) days, that level of enthusiasm should "stick" all the way into the voting booth. 10% "fence-sitters" is still a good size chunk of voters out there still undecided (10,000,000). The #GOPs have been successful in the past by carting the fence sitters directly to their polling places, free of charge. There's the "battleground." Still breath'n seniors and #GEN-Z newbies!
Letting you go was one of the worst mistakes CNN has made. And that’s saying something. I miss your interactive analysis with anchors and panelists. As an ancient woman of 66, I’ve been a newsaholic since my teens, when it was necessary for my activities and competitions. I don’t just watch CNN; I watch Fox, MSNBC, Newsmax, ABC & read EVERYTHING, including AP, WaPo & too many digital outlets to name. I have a WHOLE LIST of dumb things CNN is doing; apparently it’s easier to cut costs/talent ($$) than increase viewership. Their biggest mistake is the failure to realize that viewers need to TRUST their news sources. That is difficult to do if every 2 weeks there is a new face or set bringing it to you. And having the ANCHORS STAND around in front of screens like they’re weathermen is ridiculous. All I can think about is poor Sarah Sidner’s feet having to stand in those heels. But, I digress. You were REALLY GOOD at that. You are REALLY GOOD at this. Now continue having a good life and ignore the social media haters. They are good for nothing but trying to make others feel as miserable as they do. (Sorry about the rambling.)
Chris, you are right that people forget the humanity of people in the public eye. Public figures become pixels, someone on whom people feel the freedom to dump unkindness and cruelty.
One thing I’ve learned after forty years as a pastor is that, whether from personal interactions or those online, there will always be two groups of people whose opinions I must take with a bit of the proverbial “grain of salt”:
1. Those who think everything I do is wonderful, genius, and wise.
2. Those who think I’m the biggest idiot and incompetent in the world.
Neither of those camps come close to knowing the truth about or my work or life.
So, I try to listen to those who fall into neither of those camps and keep on keepin’ on.
The other thing I do is pray, “Lord, get me—my ego, my insecurities, my need to please—out of the way.”
Getting laid off doesn’t mean you were doing a bad job at CNN. I’ve appreciated your work since your Washington Post days.
Keep at it, man! And, as a former agnostic who came to faith in my mid-twenties, to you as a guy who struggles with belief, I say, “God bless you.”
Haters gonna hate. I think it is a terrible way to go through life, but it is not my life. We love you, Chris.
I, for one, am glad your employment position changed. It allowed you to reach your potential as an opinion writer. Subscribing to your newsletter was money well spent

Not that I have a high confidence level in this kind of formula (or assessing who has the advantage on any specific point), this looks razor thin.
