It’s amazing how many of these strong, rugged Republican congressmen need to be protected. The base is the same way. Always under threat and needing a daddy figure to ward off the monsters.
How crazy is it that Sean Hannity and Fox can twist the arms of GOP Congressmen to do as they wish? Is that the role of the media? And yes, I realize that Hannity is NOT a journalist but an entertainer. I'm pretty sure if Chris was still employed at CNN that he would not be sending emails to Congressmen basically threatening them.
I truly hate when “the media” attempt to “read the tea leaves”, whether it’s how the Justices are “leaning” after oral arguments in the SCOTUS or what the vote total is going to be in Congress, as they’re almost never more than educated guesses. And in this column, Chris, that’s precisely what you’re doing.
I know, it’s expected of you, as a “political pundit”, but I still find it disconcerting.
I’ll state the obvious: there is NO ONE singularly LESS qualified to be Speaker of the House of Representatives than Jim Jordan. Period. (OK, George Santos is even less qualified, but I digress). Lots of “ink” has been written about why: not one single legislative accomplishment in his entire career in office; he’s never built a coalition ever, always being the “legislative terrorist” that would rather throw bombs; and, of course, his despicable attempts to overturn the Constitution for Donald J. Trump, all of which is HIGHLY documented and done so UNDER OATH by those with DIRECT knowledge. And that he is totally rudderless when it comes to morality, as his time at OSU has proven (again, with the extremely credible testimony of his former wrestlers UNDER OATH).
That he will, likely, be the next Speaker makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.
My only hope is that his (hopefully short) time in Congress will prove to any independent or undecided voter that what used to be the GOP CANNOT and WILL NOT govern and do “the people’s work”. With any luck at all, this will further the possibility of a massive “blue wave” come November 2024.
I just don’t know if my 401(k) can survive the hit between now and then...
“He’s the best person to keep us out of a government shutdown and the best person to keep conservative media off our backs as we face a shutdown,” That is a terrible reason to elect anyone, regardless of the party. We are doomed.
Nah, the election is 13 months out. Voters don't have very good memories. This, like everything else that goes on in the world, shall be relegated to the trash heap of old news.
Just when you think it can’t get any worse, the GQP never ceases to amaze.
I bet Jordan’s second act as speaker will be to start a new Benghazi investigation, right after he cuts the DOJ budget in half.
As for any budget he gets through Congress with his fellow travelers, who have all dived head first into the rabbit hole; good luck getting it through the senate.
RE: "...and the best person to keep conservative media off our backs."
Perfect example that the Republicans are unserious about doing the people's business. If they were there to enact legislation than simply collecting their $175k a year, they would be horrified that the the last thing they're interested is --- is the people's business.
BTW --- Tom Nicols (professor emeritus from the Naval War College) stated the other day on the "Julie Mason Show" that most Republican Congressmen would not be able to ascend further than middle-management in a third-rate corporation.
They are there for the celebrity and a salary/benefits light years ahead of their otherwise reality.
Of course! Why do what’s best for the U.S.? Spineless jellyfish. In my 62 years, I haven’t seen a bigger batch of cowardly politicians since the post-Trump 2016 election Republicans.
Well, for the 20 or so Biden republicans plus a few other moderate stragglers, a vote for JJ might well doom their re-election. And a successful primary challenge would guarantee it, like that seat in SW Washington state last cycle
Fundamentally, the problem with the US governance is the extreme partisan weaponization of the primary system and the gerrymandering of electoral districts to the extent that the politicians are more afraid of their own gang of partisan voters than the general electorate.
Unfortunately, as most of the responsibility for Federal elections rests at the state level, in that change is impossible without revamping the Constitution, which is improbable at best and impossible at worst.
Jordan and the rest of the deplorables are continuing to spiral down that cliff at a faster and faster speed. Zero interests in facts, zero interest in democracy, zero interest in governing, zero interest in legislating, it’s all very disconcerting. This affects everyone in this country and we haven’t hit bottom yet.
This is perfect. Jordan will bully all the vulnerable members who can then wear their scarlet J as they fend off challenges from the right and lose the general. Jim Jordan is bullying his way to minority leader.
My question for all of these representatives is which one of you feel you have done such a great job that you should not face a primary challenge. I believe that the congressional approval rating is around 20-30 percent. All of them should have primary challenges each election cycle. Maybe once in a while we could have some of these people vote with the idea that all Americans need to benefit from their votes. The voters in their district will always be represented even if they do select someone different in the next election.

Lucky for them they’re not in Ukraine or Israel.

Thanks I hadn’t seen that in ages. Is the T for Trump? Jubilation must’ve had some bone spurs, too.

They are operating out of fear of losing rather than principle.
Exactly. We are doomed. What do voters think? Will that hold after the primaries?

Pigs will fly first!
Let’s make him their worst nightmare if he wins.
Bunch of amoral, spineless cowards.
They're all worthless cowards, not to mention none of them is in the deep end of the IQ pool.
Well, thanks for ruining my Tuesday morning
