With Trump's loyalists now likely to take charge of DOJ (Bondi already installed) and FBI (Patel likely to be confirmed out of fear of reprisals against no votes from DJT) who arrests Musk and his hacker crew when they don't keep their hands out of the Treasury? Can FBI agents act without the blessing of the director? I'll echo what others have said as well. How do we break the spell of Trumpism in Congress and help the GOP Congressmen and women grow a spine to stand up to Trump's chaos?
How extremely far off the rails do you think Trump will have to go before Republicans would stand up to him in any meaningful way? Invading Canada or Mexico to add them to U.S. territory? Starting a war with western Europe on the side of Russia? Disbanding Congress like Emperor Palpatine? Or is it just the reality that they'll never stand up to him?
Chris, I'm a 73-year-old woman, a liberal Democrat. I'm appalled right now both by what Trump is doing (the string of king-like decrees, the deliberate chaos, the quasi-legal EOs), AND the silence from the Dems in Congress and the Senate. Who is going to stand up to this guy? Censure him, expose him, and explain over and over that what's happening is NOT NORMAL and we must not get used to it. I'm so angry at the Democratic party, which is partially (maybe in large part) responsible for Trump winning the election. Do you remember what many of us said last fall?? "WELL, IT WON'T BE THAT BAD IF HE WINS, RIGHT?" omg, we were so wrong.
Debbie, I am in complete agreement with your statements. I am 5 yrs older than you, but I also wonder where are the statesmen/women who will stand up to Trump? Sadly, I only see players and politicians who seem to be afraid of him. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY,should be allowed that much power. He needs to remember, he is NOT a King!
Chris, I know you believe our country will survive Trumps craziness and that the guardrails will hold. My question is about the post Trump era. How do our allies or anyone else for that matter, ever trust us again? If I were Europe, Japan, Canada, etc, I would no longer view the US as a country that can be counted on.
Chris, I know you have said fealty to trump is a must, but, isn’t his about face towards Ukraine worthy of some kind of rebuke from republicans who have supported Ukraine? The crickets are really loud.
This may have been asked already. If the Trump DOJ gets the case against Eric Adams dismissed, why is there no mention anywhere of the NY state DA charging with the same corruption charges?
Trump doesn't REALLY believe that Ukraine started the war with Russia, right? This is all just a negotiating tactic to get the rare earth minerals from Ukraine because they are desperate- and maybe to get other European countries to chip in something to affirm the US participation in NATO - and accept Ukraine for membership eventually, right? RIGHT?
Do you think it is even safe to file my taxes this year, especially if I am getting a refund? With all this uncertainty, I'm beginning to wonder about it.
So Elon brought in a handful of his super programmers to sort through an amount of data most of us couldn’t begin to imagine. They can write programs that say show me everything that looks like waste and fraud. But to find ACTUAL waste and fraud, extensive hands on analysis would be needed. Who is providing all of the eyeballs to understand what the programs are spitting out?
Happy Birthday, Chris. In your all knowing opinion, do you think there is any "room" for Mayor Pete in helping to save the Democratic party? I think he is one of the best orators in politics today and I agree with you that Chuck Schumer is not the person to lead.
My main big question is "Who or when will the kitchen table details of all these major government cuts be explained to people in language they can understand? Such "lists" would also help people see the hundreds of things these agencies and their employees DO FOR THEM EVERY DAY -- to balance any small example of fraud (in the grand scope of things). I understand this is boring but without such a counterbalance over the years, the hatred of government has continued to fester, leading us today, to watching arsonists torch our institutions.
Elon Musk is sleeping on the floor of his office while Trump golfs, goes to sporting events and looks surprised at the executive orders he’s signed. How are we not to be exasperated at the turn of events?
Chris, I tend to agree with you that while Trump is crazy and a terrible President, America's institutions will largely hold, elections will continue, etc. But I do confess I'm more concerned seeing some of his latest moves (Adams case dismissal, abandoning Zelensky). How about a 1-10 scale of your concerns from election day to inauguration day to today? Any changes? (and let's say 1 is "relax, it's fine", 10 is "the fascist dictatorship is here").
While not downplaying how radical some of Trump's changes have been, you have been pretty consistent in stating your view that he is not the threat to democracy that many on the left (and maybe some in the center) claim. What are some things that he could do that could change your mind on that point? I guess one would be still being President on January 21, 2029, absent a constitutional amendment that clearly won't happen. Any others that come to mind? The wipeout of independent agencies and the rank politicization of the criminal side of DOJ seem to be huge steps in that direction, although he would claim that "Biden did it first."
I'm one of those that has basically stuck my head in the sand while at the same time throwing up my hands and saying "there's nothing I can do." Please, give me hope, is there anything that can be done to stop some of the madness that is Trump? I mean he's doing illegal stuff and nobody seems to care.
I'm trying this one again:

Where is the democratic party leader to counter Trump???

Great question!
Thank you! It's been on my mind as I'm coming up to the time when I usually file our taxes.
