If one needed further proof of the complete worthlessness and uselessness of modern Republicans and the contemporary Republican Party, this situation is the clincher.

To the rest of the world our government, in not so many words, looks like an out-of-control clown car. We look so incredibly stupid and collectively childish. I don't know what else to say.

There are no words.

God help us all if the GOP ever wins control of the White House, the Senate and the House again. I'm not sure which would be worse--the things that they will do or the things that they wouldn't be able to agree on. It would definitely be a clown show.

That absolutely cannot happen. It would be the closest to anarchy we've been in a long time. Different white supremacist groups would be represented throughout government, and they would begin fighting against each other. Just wait until Neo-Nazis and Evangelicals figure out they don't like one another and really do not support the same style of governance.

I truly think we are starting to go over the cliff that we have been teetering on. Trump thought the world was laughing at us before he became POTUS???? We are a laughing stock, as far as the GOP is concerned. God help us if Trump gets in the White House again.

I suppose it’d be fun to make McCarthy speaker so they could give him the sack again. He got 8 months so far compared to Pelosi’s 8 years. Missed it by that much.

“simple majority”

Definitely a misnomer. Lawler is a freshman, right? I don’t understand why he’s become such a go-to. It’s not like he’s some kind of Liz Cheney/ Adam Kinzinger iconoclast. Seems kind of mealy-mouthed. If he actually has issues with the way his party is operating maybe he should try a little harder.

Because I ask this rhetorical question all the time, whatever happened to the expunging of Trump’s impeachments that was supposed to be done before the August recess. I want to see people like Lawler voting on that and the impeachment of Biden

Lawler is a freshman from a Biden district and extremely vulnerable, that's why. He'd do better switching parties.

Seeing how hard it is for the R's to agree on a speaker, just think of how hard it is going to be for the R's to agree on any spending bills due in 40 days or so - feels like a government shutdown is coming...

I'm a dummy on all of this, but how does not having a Speaker impact them being able to pass a message of support for Israel?

The Speaker is in charge of ALL House business. Without one, they can't do anything.

don't they have that little bow tie guy?

He is Speaker in name only. No real power.

Expand full comment

In theory. In fact he seems to be authorized only to hold the election for Speaker.

That and the power to take away offices from Pelosi and Hoyer as was drafted in the Constitution by Jefferson.

Can't wait to see the office HE gets when the Democrats reclaim the House. :)

I agree there appears to no one in the Republican chamber that could achieve the needed support. What about outside? If I understand correctly, the Speaker does not have to come from a member of the House. No one comes immediately to mind but it’s worth considering. It would need to be someone that would not alienate the Democrats such that they would refuse to work with him/her.

What ever happened to the Cult leader's( Trump) endorsement of Jordan? Not enough Cult members in the House to support their member may be.

My civics might be frosty, but couldn't the Republican Party expel the extreme MAGA members? I could be wrong, but wouldn't that make them independents and hand the speakership to Democrats? Is there any chance that could happen? I fully realize the ramifications, including extremists seeking out Republican "defectors", but simply could this happen at some point? I figure that, in an existential way, institutional Republicans and perhaps RINOs have to denounce MAGA in an up-front, in-your-face way.

Perhaps I'm just thinking of the future of the party, which surely those moderate Republican members of Congress have been calculating for years now. Am I to heed the pretty left view that the party is gone, overtaken by fascists, fate sealed regardless of what anyone does or says? Or do I believe that at least some of the remaining moderates have a "Break Glass In Case Of Emergency" moment, or red line that will be crossed, where they rise back up and retake the party?
