If Biden stays in at this point, the DNC is going to resemble a funeral.

Or a Shiva (for us Jewish voters).

At this point, I think the only thing we can do is commit to fight for and vote for WHOEVER the Democratic candidate is. Maybe that sounds incredibly simplistic, but if Trump wins, the Democratic party will year itself apart with everyone blaming everyone else.

As Chris has said many times, this will be a binary choice and wishful thinking will not help.

That’s not the point though. While we here all reasonable, thoughtful people who recognize Biden’s many talents and successes - and who NEVER could support the horrorshow alternative - that’s NOT how many swing voters in key states look at the world. Many of them ABSOLUTELY would support Trump over a clearly too-old Joe. That’s why he HAS to go, and soon!

Chris will likely catch hell here for doing reporting, but everything he said certainly checks out with other stuff I’ve been reading and hearing. It certainly feels as though the tide may be turning towards Biden stepping back. No one has denied advising Biden that he should go.

Yup, exactly. If Jeffries and Schumer had NOT done this, we would absolutely have heard from their spokespeople that this never happened. Instead, "crickets chirping". So, yes, I think that it absolutely happened.

Chris,

All accounts i've read indicate the Jill biden, Hunter, and Biden's sister are important voices. Jill Biden and the sister do not seem (or at least did not seem) to be out of touch. How can these 2 "advisors" be looking at this in a way that makes any logical sense. Sure, Biden can ride this out, but they have to see that he cannot win.

OK, truth... i live in a magical land with Unicorns and rainbows and still had thoughts that "when people get a load of Trump..." well, we have gotten a load of Trump this last week at the convention. i think the average voter will not see them as the crazy dangerous lot that i do. The unicorns are stampeding and it is not looking good for the rainbows, either. I think Trump could shoot someone and tell people that he is getting rid of SS because it is for their own good and they'd still vote for him. I saw the poll that said most Dems want him out, but do we have polls that indicate that Dems wouldn't vote for him?

thanks

I have had an”evolution” on the Biden candidacy. I voted for Biden in 2020. I voted for Biden in the 2024 primary. I watched the debate in despair, but I read the transcript and while Biden’s presentation was awful, his answers were coherent. The debate was presented to Democratic voters as a “one-off”, and I accepted that. HOWEVER…..the President’s appearances since then have done nothing to convince me that the debate was simply a bad night. There has been a rapid and profound change in Biden since the terrific State of the Union address. He is physically very diminished, and appears to be declining a bit cognitively. Still, he is head and shoulders above Donald J Trump, and if he were still the candidate in November, I’d vote for him. HOWEVER, there’s a whole raft of younger Americans who find it sifficult to get motivated even to go to the polls. I talked to my 35-year-old nephew, a 2020 Biden voter, who did not even vote in the primary this time, and who said that neither candidate represented his interests. I hope that he’ll vote in November, but I wouldn’t count on it. If we thought that voter apathy was part of the downfall of Hillary Clinton’s campaign (and she actually won the popular vote!) just wait until November 2024 if Biden is at the top of the ticket. We need a candidate who can “bring it” to Donald J Trump, and sadly, Biden is no longer that guy.

THIS is what will cost us the election if Biden is the nominee. I have two millennials who will vote for whoever is at the top of the ticket (because that's how their mother raised them, plus they're intelligent), but many of my friends' same-aged kids do not feel the same and will likely not vote. From what I can tell, there is similarly little support among twenty-somethings.

We need a ticket that can engender some excitement.

Agreed, Biden is not that guy. He is gonna have to step down.

Chris,

I completely agree with you...the momentum is building for Biden to step aside, and the timing is soon...this weekend, or perhaps Monday. Batter up, Kamala! It's time to step up to the plate...

Chris is just reporting the reality of Biden's situation, don't yell at him. He didn't push for an early debate and then give the worst performance of his life.

Please please please let this be the “Devine Message” that Biden was waiting for to decide to step aside for someone younger and more articulate…. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Joe may or may not have Covid-19. If he does, I hope he has a quick and uneventful recovery.

History shows that Presidents often displayed sleight-of-hand tricks - saying or scheduling one thing as a cover to do something different or secretive.

Could his current Covid-19 diagnosis simply be a convenient segue into self-reflection? "Gee, getting Covid drove home the point that my 81-year old body may not be up to the rigors of serving another four-year term, therefore I'm withdrawing from the Democratic nomination."

I'm sticking with my original prediction. Biden makes a "breaking news" announcement from the Oval Office tonight, right in the middle of Trumpty-Dumpty's acceptance ramble.

I doubt he's lying about COVID - this isn't the Trump administration. But hopefully Biden does engage in some self-reflection in Delaware, because his legacy and the country's future are both on the line. I think he ends up bowing out sometime next week, because this whole situation isn't sustainable.

I love the idea of raining on Trump’s parade with a Biden announcement to withdraw his candidacy immediately before/during Trump’s keynote address!!!

Wishful thinking but that would be such a boost for Dems & throw a curve ball to Republicans!!

Wouldn't it be refreshing if the Dems - just this once - didn't shoot themselves in the foot and fumble an opportunity... (talk about mixed metaphors!)

Trump has publicly fallen asleep again, this time at the GOP Convention. I wonder...can it be his age and his ill health? Meanwhile, you pursue the most effective President who has done the most good for the most people in several decades. SMH.

He's going to get crushed in the election. Does that not mean anything to you? We can all agree that he did a great job under very difficult circumstances for the last 3+ years, but that does not in the eyes of increasing numbers of voters mean that he will be able to do the job for four more years. This is about the future, and who presents the best opportunity to prevent a second term as President for Trump. That is the ONLY factor I am considering right now.

Poetic justice. Dems and liberal media deserve everything that is happening and coming to them for all their dishonesty! They’ve made this bed now lie in it.

It was interesting to me to hear that Biden said a health condition would make him consider stepping aside. That is exactly what Trump said a year-ish ago about his candidacy. If Biden decides to step aside, he has good speech writers so he could do it graciously and save his legacy at the same time. I admit I am super burned out over all this election stuff.

Governors are not going to go against him because they want time to run against the GOP in the presidential race in 2028. Newsom is hoping for a Trump win because that makes it easier for him to win in 2028

Please call Schumer's office. Our only hope of keeping Trump from being re-elected is if Biden steps aside. Half a dozen other Democrats (Kamala and several Democratic governors) might win the presidency. Biden's odds of winning are approaching zero. Call Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's office and ask him to press Biden to step aside. Phone: (202) 224-6542

I've also contacted my congress people and governor with the same message. Many Democrats, fearing Trump will win by a landslide, won't even bother to vote in November. Consider the downstream effect on Democratic candidates for the "lower" offices - congress, governor. It's impossible to overstate the risk.

I ask everyone here to join me and make these phone calls.

The only people who benefit if Biden is the Democratic nominee are Joe, Jill, and Trump.

This isn't disrespecting Biden's decades of accomplishments. It's our last chance to save us from autocracy.

I'm a life-long Democrat. I also live in reality, not in a fantasy world of destructive positive thinking when it's unmoored from reality.

The hits keep coming. The latest bout of COVID is giving Biden a snapshot of what the next 3 months will bring. Every gaffe, every bobble, and every runny nose will be attributed to his age, consuming his campaign, and that doesn't include the potential of another debate-level disaster awaiting every public appearance.

It's over; the country has decided it is time to go.

One key aspect to remember. All this democratic induced self destruction is driven by their base’s absolute fear of Trump. Who may create a regime so toxic, the United States resembles the third Reich. And indeed the world will burn if Republicans side with Putin. That said, there are leaders the democrats have which will turn all this around within a month, given the news cycles. Provided they select them to unify their party. Democratic voters, along with refugees from the Republicans, and independents, more than make up 65% of the electorate. Democrats are still popular even if Biden isn’t.
