The Morning: How will history remember Joe Biden?

A new poll has bad news for Biden-philes.

Joe Biden won’t be a former president for another 13 days. But the talk of how history will remember him is already underway.

Gallup released polling Tuesday morning that provides us with one of the first looks of how public approval about Biden’s four years in office stands. And it is not good for the 46th president.

Here’s Gallup’s findings:

Just 19% believe Biden will be remembered as an “outstanding” or “above average” president while 54% think he will be seen as a “below average” or “poor” president.

That puts Biden below all but one of his 9 predecessors in office: Richard Nixon. And Nixon was at the center of the biggest presidential scandal in modern American history!

Biden’s low numbers are not just the result of Republicans believing he will be remembered as a poor president — although 76% of them do! Instead, it’s that his own party is less than enthused about how history will remember him.

Check out the breakdown by party of the Gallup numbers:

Almost the same amount of Democrats believe he will be remembered as an “average” president" (38%) as say history will regard Biden as an “outstanding” or “above average” president (44%).

Now. Biden isn’t even an ex-president yet. And how his presidency wears — and is remembered — over time is likely to change.

You only need to look as far as Donald Trump’s first term for evidence. When he left office, Trump was expected to be remembered as a very mediocre president according to Gallup.

Just 29% of Americans thought Trump would be seen in the light of history as an “outstanding or “above average” president while 61% thought he would be remembered as “below average” or “poor.”

Four years on from that initial finding, Americans are MUCH more optimistic about how history will see Trump’s first term. Today 40% say he will go down as an “outstanding” or “above average” president while 44% say he will be thought of as a “below average” or “poor” president.

Will Biden enjoy a similar improvement by January 2029? He has to hope so.
