The Morning: Remember what happened 4 years ago today

American Democracy is *still* not healthy

Four years ago today was one of the darkest days in American democracy: A mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop the counting of the electoral votes that would make Joe Biden the 46th president of the United States.

They did so at the urging of the man who had lost the election — Donald Trump. And they did so based on disproven claims that the election had been stolen from him.

That will not happen today. There won’t be attempts by the House or the Senate to refuse to certify the votes in certain states like Arizona and Pennsylvania as there were four year ago. People will not riot because their preferred candidate did not win. No one will chant to “hang” Kamala Harris, the sitting vice president, because of her entirely ceremonial role in overseeing the electoral college count. No police officers will be injured by the mob.

And, why? Why will January 6, 2025 be so different than January 6, 2021?

Simple — because Trump won this time.

Harris has spent no time in the months since her loss questioning the validity of the vote. Or suggesting she was somehow cheated out of a win. Or telling her supporters to come to Washington today to “stop the steal.”

In fact, Harris released a video on X this morning saying this:

Today, I will perform my constitutional duty as Vice President to certify the results of the 2024 election. This duty is a sacred obligation — one I will uphold guided by love of country, loyalty to our Constitution, and unwavering faith in the American people.

And so, we will — as we have all but once in the modern era — begin the peaceful transition of power, a process that will end in two weeks when Trump is inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States.

But, don’t get it twisted. We do NOT have a healthy democracy right now. It’s not healthy for one major party to only say the election was free and fair when they win.
