In the wake of an assassination attempt against his rival for the presidency, Joe Biden has spoken to the American people three times in the space of the past 30 hours or so.
Biden spoke first, on Saturday afternoon, from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Then, back in Washington, he spoke Sunday morning. And then again, in a primetime address from the Oval Office, last night.
That is not an accident.
Everything — including the response to an assassination attempt — that a president running for reelection does four months before voters go to the polls is a) political and b) calculated.
Which, honestly, it should be! Joe Biden is trying to win this race. Everything he does has to further that goal or else why do it?
What is he up to here? Well, remember what Biden’s situation was before Saturday. He was trying to put down a revolt in his own party centered on an attempt to remove him from the ticket over concerns he is too old and not up to the job he is seeking.
What better way to prove those doubters wrong than to be all over TV during a national crisis — trying to calm the public and appeal to our better angels?
With each address to the public, Biden seems to be saying to his Democratic critics: The debate over whether I am your nominee is over. I am the president and we are moving on.
As I wrote yesterday, I do think the effort to remove Biden has largely fizzled — or, at a minimum, been pushed to the back burner by what happened in Pennsylvania this weekend.
Biden is trying to end it completely.
Thanks for checking out The Morning. This is always a free post. But I would love if you would become an investor in what I am building here. It’s $6 a month or $60 for the year.
