Even as Vice President Kamala Harris was delivering her closing argument of the 2024 campaign in front of thousands of people at the Ellipse in Washington, DC Tuesday night, her boss — President Joe Biden — was, again, making her road to the White House harder.
In an get-out-the-vote call with a liberal group, Biden was asked about Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally — and, in particular, comments made about Hispanics by a comedian.
The president said this:
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it's un-American.”
Or, did he say this:
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it's un-American.”
You can listen/watch for yourself here:
I heard the former — as in Biden denouncing Trump backers as garbage. The White House insisted he said the latter, specifically calling out the comedian as garbage.
Either way, the comment immediately lit up the Internet. JD Vance tweeted about it. Trump referenced it at his campaign rally. Cable news went wild. Comparisons to Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” were everywhere.
Whether you are on team “supporters” or team “supporter’s” doesn’t really matter. Biden’s comment drowned out what Harris was hoping would be wall-to-wall media coverage of her speech and handed the former president a gift to rev up his already-rabid supporters.
If I were Harris, who hasn’t said anything yet about the controversy, I would use this moment to get more distance from Biden. Will she?
