I really respect you and your work chris. But I just dont get it. Why such a double standard between Trump and Biden? If Trump wouldve said that it wouldnt even been news. People would say "iits just trump being trump". No consequences. But Biden says it and people act like its the end of the world.

Look im not defending his comments. I think they were stupid. But I dont understand why Trump can say things 10000x time worst and get away with it.

Dawn Kucera's avatar

I so agree. Where is the attention focused on all of trump’s cohorts and what they keep saying (did Chris do a piece on one of trump’s speakers referencing Harris’ “pimps?” Where’s his outrage over that? And, oh, by the way, maybe some pundits have forgotten… Biden isn’t running anymore.

Frederic's avatar

To be fair to Chris he has many time commented on all things bad Trump said. So this is not directed at him. I get it, its his job to cover both candidates. But it was just a general comment made ababout why Trump can get away with stuff that biden cant.

Lucy Perrotti's avatar

I agree 100%. Chris-this wasn’t worth calling out. Just like it isn’t worth Kamala commenting. She has much bigger fish ti fry.

James LeBlanc's avatar

I’m not sure that’s fair to Chris. He does call out Trump for his awful behavior. The general coverage though I agree with you.

Frederic's avatar

Thats exactly what I said in my previous message :)

James LeBlanc's avatar

My bad. My phone doesn’t always show replies just the og message. Apologies my man.

Leva's avatar

The reality is that the Dems and the media blew up the remarks of a ‘comedian’ at a Trump rally while demanding to erase the comments of the sitting President about half the nation.

NanceeM's avatar

Give me a break! The "comedian's" routine was poisonously unfunny and warranted criticism. While I think the explanation of Biden's remark was perfectly plausible, and likely true, he should just stay out of it at this point, especially given his difficulty speaking clearly.

Leva's avatar

Ahhh, when a comedian utters something we should pay attention, but not the President's?

NanceeM's avatar

Biden should have kept his mouth shut, but that doesn't excuse any of the hatefest at MSG.

Leva's avatar

The comedian at Trump's rally was inappropriate and voters can decide on the issue. But notice the difference. The media flipped out about a comedian and painted a picture that they were Trump's words. When Biden says 1/2 of America is garbage everyone holds him to a standard below a comedian while painting a picture that Biden didn't say that.

James P.'s avatar

Because the democrats have aligned themselves with the anti-Trump movement. It’s hard to argue that his comments are beyond the pale when the democrats make similar comments. I feel that this is to their own detriment, and that they should take a page out of the Trump playbook and be less uptight, but that’s not the path they’ve chosen. It’s the whole Michelle Obama, “when they go low, we go high.”

CE's avatar

If Donald J Trump can call me vermin and an enemy from within, I am OK if Biden calls anyone who still supports Trump “garbage”. The media attention on the blathering of old men is unequal.

Larry Beckett's avatar

Nothing Biden could say one way or the other could/would switch the die hard MAGA Trump supporters into Harris supporters. It’s much to do about nothing!

Richard Ramey's avatar

and the only place you heard much about the Biden comment was on Fox News, with its wall-to-wall coverage.

Dawn Kucera's avatar

Sure Chris. Kamala gives a dynamite speech before 60-70K voters, and your big news of the day is Biden and the existence, or not, of an apostrophe. Why not a comparison of Biden’s comment to all the filth that came out of MSG. Lil Marco goes ballistic over this, but huh, I can’t find his condemnations of the language used against Harris and Hillary Clinton at trump’s rally.

Howard A Pavony's avatar

YOU are the one distracting everyone from Kamala's amazing uplifting speech on the ellipse - YOU decided Biden's gaffe is more important than the Presidential candidates uplifting amazing speech....WHY are you making Biden an issue -YOU CHOOSE TO DO THAT NO ONE CARES ABOUT BIDEN'S comment except people like you looking for click baits and another paid subscription.....knock it off - you are covering and making it important....bullshit liberal who let's Trump use the media to win.....your are a phony and being used by Trump = patheric...no one cares about Joe Biden at this point....was considering a paid subscription - no NEVER will...

Dutch's avatar

Anything negative on the Ds or positive words on President Trump and people just lose their minds. It’s very noticeable and even more humorous.

Chris is doing his level best to be objective and a journalist. Give the guy a break!

Howard A Pavony's avatar

Weigh the important of the actual Presidential candidate giving a MAJOR speech for 45 minutes with the former president's 5 second "maybe" gaffe - how does that give priority to Biden's short comment versus a major speech by the actual candidate - Chris wanted to highlight this stupid comment and draw attention away from Kamala's speech - I don't think it worked but he's trying to be manipulated by Trump over and over again, very sad!

Dr. Abubakar Ibrahim's avatar

Now Chris Cilliza is concerned about what Biden said about Trump's supporters. How about Trump referring to America as garbage can. Should we expect a post from you on that?

Dutch's avatar

Chris said he’s got more coming today on VP Harris’ speech. Give the guy a moment to put it together. It’s easier to comment on an incredible stupid insensitive comment than an entire speech. Chris has gotta get some sleep at night too. Slow down cowboy he’ll get there….

Howard A Pavony's avatar

He gave it much more weight than it deserved, but we shall see if his better instincts win long term.....hope he comes out strongly in favor of her major speech..

Dr. Abubakar Ibrahim's avatar

Don't hold your breath on that one Howard A Pavony.

Leva's avatar

The cognitive dissonance and outright deception is amazing. A “comedian” at a Trump describes Puerto Rico as garbage. It is wrong and reflects poorly on Trump. Dems and media lose their mind over the comedian’s comment. Then, a sitting President calls Trump supporters or half the country garbage. Then like a true facist, alters the historical record. Dems now demand journalist not cover facts and wish to erase the collective memory.

Suzy Wolski's avatar

Thank you! Biden says one tiny thing and it’s blown out of shape Trump says hundreds of disgusting things every day and it’s no big deal! No wonder this election is so close, the press has decided who should win it will be more interesting for them the hell with the country!

Dutch's avatar

Suzy, the MSM is entirely behind VP Harris, to pretend otherwise one must have their head in the sand. It’s not even close

NanceeM's avatar

Is Fox not mainstream at this point? Those people have been blatant in their support of Trump, including appearing at campaign events and giving him an open mic on their shows. I haven't seen comparable behavior on any other outlet you define as MSM. Time to update your nomenclature and wipe the sand from you own eyes.

KOC's avatar

Deep state gvt, deep state MSM, deep state citizens. Your rabbit hole encompasses everyone other than true MAGA, doesn't it?

Christine's avatar

I really don’t care, do you?

Matt Willis's avatar

😂. I see what you did!

Drew Bittner's avatar

I think you're overstating, Chris. I didn't see coverage of this. Besides, Trump supporters are already voting for Trump. Biden isn't changing any minds.

He should be more careful about what he says--but when has he?

James Ackerman's avatar

I'm sorry Chris, but this kind of consternation is exactly why Trump is still around. This is a bs story

Brian Watkins's avatar

1. Joe Biden has been doing speaking gaffes for decades. Nothing new.

2. Trump and his people call people names all the times and it isn't even a blip.

I get it - you didn't create the double standard, but can we stop echoing it?

Paul's avatar

Man.....I couldn't agree more w/both James and Brian!

Part of the issue or ongoing issues people have w the media is equating these two candidates and their remarks/campaigns/mistakes.

Trump literally has a hit list, plans for mass deportations, further erosions of personal rights and freedoms for women.....and we are over here debating an apostrophe?

This is plain silly.

Rem....Biden isn't running?!?!?

Joy Jennings's avatar

Remember your Dad, Chris? Remember how much you loved your Dad? Would you ever turn on him or speak against him because he came out with a gaffe? Of course not...and Joe Biden is Kamala's political Dad. Six days left. Let's all take a breath here, and remember what it is to act in a decent manner when someone goofs up.

Anne MacDonald's avatar

What did you think of Harris address? She is the candidate.

Michael Elder's avatar

Biden isn’t running against Trump…and is not even 0.0009 as offensive as most of what Trump says. And I think Biden is right about Trump

S cult

Randy Robinson's avatar

You only have to read the comments here, the NYT, the WaPo, etc to know that many if not most Democrats really do think Trump supporters are garbage. Biden never did have a very good filter, and now it's even worse with his aging. What Biden said likely reflects his actual opinion.

Suzy Wolski's avatar

So it’s ok for Trump to be totally disrespectful and crude but if Biden lets out his opinion it’s despicable? He has to remain silent when a truly despicable person says disgusting things about him and millions of other Americans? He’s the president he has a right to defend himself and other Americans against this fascist wanna be .

Randy Robinson's avatar

Trump is an ass and I don't see how that relates to Biden.

Dutch's avatar

Yes it does! It’s pathetic.

I agree Trump has no filter. I've never voted for him and never will. I don't care if he apologizes or not. Trying to defend Biden by talking about Trump really just confirms Biden''s problems.

Jeff Clabault's avatar

So...Biden called Trumps supporters "garbage." Was he wrong? How DO you refer to folks who want a vile, indecent, racist, mysoginystic, serial lying, Nazi sympathizer to be their president? Hopefully, most of them are just low - zero information and are caught up in the Trump reality show. But for those who know all of the facts...garbage seems pretty accurate.

( JB still, obviously, should NOT have said it ).

Pete Athans's avatar

Chris, I respect your work- but honestly, why do you echo this NONSENSE. Biden clarified it and George Conway further did on C-Span- listen- you respect the use of the possessive and getting things correctly- the use of the possessive in Biden’s case was awkward, but clear. C’mon man, don’t give these idiot stories amplification. Comment on the Start the Steal movement 2.0, voter suppression by the Republicans and a million other urgencies.

Aaron Wolf's avatar

Grandpa Joe just needs to go take a nap until the election is over.

Suzy Wolski's avatar

Leave Biden alone at least he has common decency and integrity which Trump has never had. Just because he has aged is no reason to be so totally disrespectful. You too will age, do you want to be treated so disrespectfully because you’ve aged and it’s now ok to treat you like dirt? Being old is not a sin and being disrespectful because someone has aged doing an extremely stressful job doesn’t give anyone a license to be disrespectful! Biden has been ten times the president that Trump ever was or ever would be!
