Joe Biden announced he would not seek a second term at 1:46 pm eastern time on Sunday. Within eight hours, it wad clear that Kamala Harris was edging close to becoming the de facto replacement.
As of this morning, Harris already has the endorsement of 150+ House members, 32 Senators and more than half of the Democratic governors in the country.
Yes, she has inherent advantages. She’s the sitting vice president. Biden quickly endorsed her. She’s a black woman in a party where African Americans and females are massive constituencies.
But, she still had to make the calls. Get people on board. Work quickly to shut down the possibility of a serious challenger.
The first 24 hours of these situations are critical. And Harris nailed it.
Does this mean she is going to be a great candidate? Too early to tell — and there are warning signs from her 2020 race for sure. (I’ll have more on that soon.)
But, Democrats have to be thrilled with her first day as a candidate.
All that and more in today’s edition of The Morning. This is always a free post. But I would love if you would become an investor in what I am building here. Become a paid subscriber today! It’s $6 a month or $60 for the year!
