Trump is the OLDEST CANDIDATE IN THE HISTORY OF OUR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. He was saved from too -close observation of his mental and physical failing by the great gift of running against a guy three years older. Now, it appears likely that he’ll be running against a 59-year-old woman of Black and South Asian ancestry, a former prosecutor, attorney general, senator, and who is currently vice-president of the United States. It is a double-diaper day for Don.

Now it’s time to focus on the speeches that Trump gives and the indecipherable word salad that comes out of his mouth most of the time and discuss his cognition.

Like his acceptance speech. God that was awful

Expand full comment

are you going to convince us that you actually stayed awake during that speech?

Expand full comment

It was painful. I kept saying, when is he going to shut the hell up?

Expand full comment

Exactly right. Just play his speeches. Some people will never vote for a Democratic candidate, but they will also not degrade themselves to vote for a blathering, make-up wearing, rapist who talks to them like they're stupid. The GOP turnout might be very small. And let's not forget that the GOP congress has done nothing but stonewall.

Figuring her chances...Trump has gotta be rattled. Kamala can take circles around Trump. Shes articulate. Let's go America!!!!

I think we could be looking at a Blue wave with her and a good VP pick.

Expand full comment

I think she goes with a governor. The margin is too thin in the Senate to take someone from there. Pete Buttigieg is great and I hope to vote for him some day but this isn't his year. I'm thinking Andy Beshear would be a solid choice.

Expand full comment

Beshear would be excellent. Former Kentucky AG, two-term Governor, in a red southern state, 46 years old. Would appeal to voters in southern border states like VA and NC.

Kamala is as articulate as Biden is sharp as a tack

She was a prosecutor. She can chew Trump up and spit him out.

The prosecutor versus the convicted felon!!😁

don't forget they were once the party of law and order!

I have to laugh at the GOP calls for Biden to resign from the presidency if he's not fit enough to run again. Did a single one of them call for the insurrectionist to resign after Jan. 6?

Expand full comment

Agree. The Republican leaders have absolutely no shame. They've criticized Democratic leaders for pushing POTUS out & usurping democracy. Not considering at all how they've lined up like lemmings & sycophants to support the immoral, insurrectionist in chief.

Insurrectionist and convicted felon!😆

For me nothing has changed. I'm ANGRY that a rapist, traitor, insurrectionist, climate change denier, business fraud, sneaker and bible hawker, is leading a party that wants to deport millions of people (how is that going to be done? Who will be safe, who will you go to if you are selected by mistake?), that wants to give more money to the wealthiest, that wants to end NATO, end health care, stop all reproductive rights, bans books, put religion in public places, etc. etc. is running for president.

I will vote angry. I will stay on line as long as it takes. I will not let any obstacle keep me from voting to stop the GOP fascists from running my life. This election is a referendum on whether we are a fascist country that is allied with Putin, Kim and Xi, or the leading democracy in the world.

Vote against the GOP. That's the message.

She starts with (at least) two big advantages: She is not in her 80's or late-70's (59 years old) and she is not Trump.

Biden has made decisions that he believes in and has not been managed as so many people think. Sorry, this was a great decision by Biden as hard as it was but it was the right one. Let’s hope Harris can rip the diapers off Trump.

I would LOVE to see one podcast (just one) were Chris Cillizza, Steve Schmidt, Ruth Ben-Ghiat and Heather Cox-Richardson discussed what the next 100 or so days MAY be like and maybe a panel on Project 2025. I’ll posting this on there comments too. Who’s with me?

"Work quickly to shut down the possibility of a serious challenger."

Kamala Harris said in her statement her intention was to earn the nomination.

The Democrats are making the exact same herd-mentality error they made with Biden two years ago: the instinct to shut down any competition or dissent.

The Dems would have been strengthened by a process to vet and choose the best candidate. Harris should have welcomed challengers and asked her supporters to accept the winner of a fair competition. That would have been the bold, strong, unselfish move. And I'd add cagey too.

Expand full comment

Under other circumstances, maybe. But with so little time, being strong out of the gate so that Dems could feel good to immediately solidify rather than fracture, that’s strong leadership that we need in the moment. This isn’t March.

I definitely see your side of the argument. EXcept I see time as a surmountable obstacle - a "speed dating" mini-primary in week prior to convention could suffice. The big obstacle is that Dems just fought a bruising civil war over Biden and everyone is emotionally exhausted. There is a huge desire to move on.

I wish Harris had taken a bold step of welcoming a process. She would have won the nomination anyway, and would have earned broad respect.

Expand full comment

Didn't Harris say that she intends to "earn and win" the Dem nomination? That sounds like a process to me. I would think her and her team went through the pros and cons of running. She moved quickly like any man would have done if he was VP in these circumstances. Only she(maybe) can get access to Biden's war chest. Others will have to wait for donation process to dnc. Kudos to her for moving quickly. I remember the days before Trump and Biden election and how many Dems and op eds discounted Biden. We the people know what to do here (again).

Expand full comment

"sounds like" are the operative words.

I believe that it was disingenuous and counterproductive to pretend that she is going to earn the nomination and then take actions to make competition impossible. Her spokesperson, Simone Sanders, was on TV yesterday stating that any competitor first had to get the signatures of 600 delegates to enter. Obviously a different process would have to be created. There isn't time to circumvent such a grueling task for a single, let alone multiple, alternate candidates.

The opportunity has been lost. Harris would have had to embraced a real opportunity to test multiple candidates. It would have been a noble gesture that would have benefited the country greatly. Also I expect it would have super-charged her own cadidicacy.

The Republicans have always had an effective card to play with the anti-DEI, anti-affirmative action rhetoric. Like or not, the in-play swing voters do NOT think like Democrats. Opposition to racial prefaces is a solidly majority position in 2024. When Harris allies have argued that denying Harris the nomination was "bypassing an African American Woman" they are making an ahistorical argument that re-enforces the Republican strong card. Vice Presidents throughout history have always been opposed in seeking the presidency. Unless a president withdraws for medical reasons, there is no VP entitlement.

The ship has sailed. I understand the value and sentiment in coronating Harris. I wish she had been bolder.

She nailed it just now. Bring it

Love how quickly the tables turned here. When Pres. Biden was running his age wasn’t even an issue. If anyone brought it up, they were roundly attacked. Now that he dropped out, what’s the biggest issue? Former Pres. Trump’s age.

Does it mean that the GOP will tamp down their misogyny or anti-diversity messages and policies? Not a chance. Those are central to what that party has become

First...what the heck is wrong with Joe Manchin? The guy is more needy than a 12 week old puppy.

Second..great start for KH. Good for her! Now the Dems must be smart and do the work necessary to be sure she will have the votes BEFORE they coronate her.

So in the end the most powerful person on the planet was forced to make a decision to leave the race that he really didn’t want to leave and then endorse a person he honestly didn’t want to endorse bc he knows she cant beat Trump. If JB was forced into this decision I wonder what other decisions have been made by others that he hasn’t been comfortable making. This entire presidency appears to be a scam.

I’d love to know exactly what trump is bringing that Biden didn’t. Trump will try to rip apart checks and balances and take over the DOJ to go after his ‘enemies’. Just as a point of information, Biden got a bill passed that helped public schools and food programs. Red states have refused the money so they could strip public schools of these programs because they are all trying to push religion into the school system and get rid of public schools. Trump wants to get rid of the department of education for starters. The party of less government has been busily passing all kinds of laws restricting voting rights and women’s rights for health care. Sorry but the economy is doing well, unemployment is down, inflation is down. I agree that the border was an issue and now it’s being addressed. But the infrastructure bill has given all states much needed money and jobs. People do not realize what Biden has accomplished. I’m sorry but Trump’s proposed big tax bill for the rich, and tariffs will tank the economy. So fall into the pit, but Trump is a danger.

We will certainly have to agree to disagree. Trump will, I my opinion, easily defeat VP Harris in November. She is a terrible candidate as was evidenced in the primary she bailed in b4 the first votes were cast. I do wish you good luck and good fortune but the Dems are truly playing a losing hand this time around.

Let’s not forget who signed the deal with the Taliban. And released 5000 prisoners. Trump himself was going to pull out without warning but was talked out of it. As for inflation, again there was a pandemic and Trump happily signed two checks during that time. The debate was terrible, but the US did very well under Biden, whether or not you choose to acknowledge facts. Solid bills were passed to help all Americans. Trump couldn’t manage an infrastructure bill if his life depended on it. N

So why was this great man shown the door?

He had a brutal debate to be honest, but Trump is incredibly inarticulate as displayed by his acceptance speech and other speeches. The GOP has become a cult and will one day realize the monster they helped create.

I was at the Trump rally this weekend. Never have I seen so much excitement and enthusiasm in an arena! Huge momentum on the GOP side. Filled a 12,000 seat arena plus the floor (hockey rink size) and literally thousands of people could not get in. People waited 4 + hours in the hot sun and couldn’t get in bc it was filled to the rafters. It’s not a cult it’s a group of hardworking people that want to see our country great again. Honest, hardworking people who are disappointed in the direction our country has gone during the JB years. VP Harris has nothing to add, the country is hungry for a change and it will happen in November of that there is no doubts.
