On Wednesday, Louisiana Republican Gov. Jeff Landry signed a law that requires the 10 Commandments be posted in every public school classroom in the state.
“If you want to respect the rule of law, you gotta start from the original law given which was Moses. … He got his commandments from God,” said Landry.
It’s the first such law in the country — but my educated guess is that it won’t be the last.
Louisiana is entirely controlled by Republicans — every state office is held by a GOPer and the party has supermajorities in the state House and Senate — and as such it is an incubator for conservative policy priorities.
As single party control in state government becomes more and more common, we are going to see lots of this sort of stuff moving through the states. Texas, Oklahoma and Utah have proposed similar legislation.
This law will be appealed — immediately — by groups who believe it violates the separation of church and state. Eventually it seems likely to wind up in front of the Supreme Court.
I break it all down in today’s edition of The Morning.
