Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told CNN’s Dana Bash Monday night that she hasn’t spoken to President Joe Biden since he dropped out of the race 16 days ago and, when asked about the relationship between the two Democratic leaders, she hedged mightily.
Bash: “Is everything OK with your relationship?”
Pelosi: “You’d have to ask him, but I hope so. Look, I love Joe Biden, respected him for over 40 years.”
You’d have to ask him!
What Pelosi’s comments make clear is that, despite Democrats’ best efforts to retroactively paint Biden’s decision not to run as a) one he came to himself and b) one that shows him prioritizing party and country over his own political legacy that is, in fact, not really what happened.
Biden was pushed out of this race — pure and simple. And Pelosi was the one leading that effort. Biden did NOT want to go — as evidenced by his weeks of public declarations that he was absolutely, 100% staying in the race.
In the end, it doesn’t matter all that much. Biden got out. Kamala Harris stepped in and quickly showed that she was better able than the president to run a competitive race against Donald Trump.
I get all that. But, let’s not kid ourselves: Joe Biden did not leave this race on his own. And he is (still) mad as hell about it.
