Hmmmm. Not sure I think this matters and not sure why it’s important to try to say Pres Biden didn’t step aside for the good of the country. These are tough calls where accepting a harsh reality takes some tough love. Just like your comparison to taking the car keys away from grandpa. He does understand, but it sucks and he is probably going to be a little grumpy and sad about it for awhile. But the very important, key fact here is that he DID do it. And as graciously as you could expect someone to do it. He easily could have said no and doomed the party. But he didn’t and he has continued to play ball. I still see this as amazing and absolutely for the good of the country. Why else do it?! And can you see Trump ever behaving this graciously? Interventions are a real thing for a reason.

It was a very difficult decision for him but he knew, I believe, that it was for his legacy as well as a potential and much more hopeful win against, as Walz said, a ‘weird’ man. Very weird!!

Christi

I was all prepared to make my big offering to the debate and... poof! You said everything i wanted to say. I see Biden as a terrific patriot. In the end he did the right thing, at great personal cost. Who cares how he got there? He did!! woohoo!!

Absolutely agree. He deserves the respect regardless

But……..stepping aside was still Biden’s decision. And, he chose country ( or at least he thought do I really need this shitstorm). I think “forced” would be going to the convention and some sort of elector revolt ( is that even possible) or the 25th amendment. Think of it this way….. let’s invoke the law of the low bar - WWTD. Trump would take everyone ( And everything) with him. So, I choose the better story for history and I think it is truth ( with a very small asterisk ).

Hey Chris. I get it but you have to give it up already! It is time to move on. You wanted Biden to step aside and he did. There was certainly a lot of pressure from all sides so now that it is done let's think ahead rather than backwards....

I don’t get the point of this post. And who got Pelosi to make this decision? Is that a story worth telling? What a distraction from the importance of the moment. And it is all speculation. Please don’t make me unsubscribe.

Although I do not share Nancy Pelosi’s views on many issues, I admire her for being a master strategist and tactical genius. She has exerted her influence in our political realm like few others in our history.

So true!

Completely agree with you, also coming from someone not joined at the hip to Nancy Pelosi. Or to any political party or person, but I admire her political skill. Her instincts were correct about the first impeachment, in warning against it.

Is it possible that Joe Biden is simply having a little mad moment like we all do when people show us that we were wrong? He's just stinging or smarting a bit, still. It is the same as convincing an elder parent to give up the car keys. Sure, they can walk into the DMV and pass the tests to secure their license. Yet, anyone who rides in their car just knows that ”it’s time”.

Biden is mad that people showed him this, when the truth is that he probably suspected as much, himself. So he is probably a little bitter, but still, he made the decision himself.

True. No one could “force” him.

All credit to Nancy and anyone else who helped get us to the right place. It's understandable that Joe had a difficult time accepting that the voting public didn't think he was up to another term. But that was the obvious truth. It's behind us now. We need to unite and fight to elect Kamala and stop Trump.

Nancy Pelosi could show the respect POTUS deserves after taking the very difficult decision to step aside, by publicly thanking him!

It would have been SO much better if Biden had just kept his promise to be a 1-term President, and not had to be forced kicking and screaming to dropping out of the race.

As far as his legacy, if Biden would have run against Trump and lost (most likely scenario), his legacy would consist solely of "Insisted upon running against Trump despite his age and infirmities, and thereby facilitated America's adoption of a Fascisct kleptocracy." That's it - nothing else that he ever accomplished would have been remembered.

exactly, he couldn't win either way. Whatever helped him make up his mind, it was the right thing to do, and he did it.

This is a strange commentary. It feels more like a regurgitation than a commentary on actual news. EVERYONE and their mother knows that Pelosi mounted a tremendous pressure campaign for Biden to step down. There’s absolutely nothing new here. Chris is commenting on this as if it was a mystery and now we all know the truth. Please. Pelosi is an unparalleled assassin who knows how to win. Call her the MJ of politics, she hates more to lose than liking to win. She, by herself, is the political equivalent of the 82nd Airborne Division. Everybody knows that. It’s not a secret. It’s not a scandal. And btw, in doing so, might’ve saved the USA and consequently the world. This is not hyperbole.

With that, if Joe’s feeling got hurt in the process, just get him a new dog and move on bc nobody really cares about that either. He has been a remarkable president and his 50+ years of service are tremendously appreciated. But he’s about to be 82-years of age, and he needed to step down.

It needed doing and Nancy “The Nasty Assassin” Pelosi got it done. And we’re thankful for that.

Conflict creates drama, drives views and advertising revenue. Hence this story. And why we read it. Pelosi can count votes. Is the best President Democrats never had. And really, might have just saved Democrats and the republic from disaster. Biden is still very well respected and leaves with his legacy intact.

It was an interesting few comments from Pelosi. Time heals all, wounds and feel this one will as well. I am also hoping that if Harris wins in November, that will help Biden feel as though his forced decision was the correct one.

Yes all that was clear to anyone who followed the whole thing... It does feel like gaslighting when everyone keeps saying how he put country first ...I'm sorry I'm a life long dem and absolutely didn't want Joe to run for a second term .....Because he's too old !!!! In the end he was forced to put country first ... I am sorry that it happened that way .. He did do a lot of great things for the country .. The story that he was furious when Obama didn't endorse him in 2016 and if he was running he would have beat Trump has some holes.. He was in deep grief over Beau and he knew he wasn't fit to run then... And lets remember a lot of things happened to cause Hillary to lose ... Comey ,the press, and mistakes she made ... I wanted Hillary and now I want Kamala...Not knowing when to get off the stage ..geez is a burden we all have to suffer for. Whatever part Nancy played she deserves our thanks... Yes I believe her when she says that she didn't tell people what to say...they can speak for themselves. But coming out the way she did helped get him out. Thank You Nancy !

Yes he is, and he has a damn good right to be. No one wants to be told they are not doing the best at what they HAVE been doing for 3+ years. He also, I think, may have seen the truth himself though. And he rose above his ego and centered on his love of country. I will always love and respect him as a awesome President that brought us back from the brink and as a proud and good man who "understood the assignment" that was best for his country. Now let's understand ours and get Kamala in the White House so all his work will not have been for naught.

Let's not forget, Pelosi herself stepped aside, solely because of her age, though she was still able to do the job (whereas with Biden, certainly the campaigning part was not clear).

For Biden, it was a choice of give up the job now, and be beloved, or (very likely) lose the job in November, and be hated. Besides, the guy seems to genuinely enjoy being POTUS, and now he gets to do it full-time for another five months without the distraction of campaigning.

Agreed. Biden is a cipher at this point. It's best to keep the attention focused on Kamala.
