The Morning: The 2 most important paragraphs of Kamala Harris' speech

Outreach!

Vice President Kamala Harris closed out the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night with an effective — if not spectacular — speech that is likely to keep the momentum she has built over the last month going.

If you missed it, you should watch the whole thing. Or read the transcript.

But, just in case you don’t, I’ve got the Cliffs Notes version for you! Here are the two most important paragraphs in her address:

And let me say, I know there are people of various political views watching tonight. And I want you to know, I promise to be a president for all Americans. You can always trust me to put country above party and self. To hold sacred America’s fundamental principles, from the rule of law, to free and fair elections, to the peaceful transfer of power.

I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations. A president who leads and listens; who is realistic, practical and has common sense; and always fights for the American people. From the courthouse to the White House, that has been my life’s work.

Throughout the convention, the prominent speakers — Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Oprah, Tim Walz and finally Harris — ALL made a point to explicitly reach out to voters outside of the Democratic base. They all made clear that you didn’t have to agree with them on everything to be for Harris this fall.

It was a striking contrast to the messaging of the Republican convention, which was largely focused on placating the GOP base.

I explain that contrast — and why it matters — in today’s edition of The Morning.
