Love Mr. Buttigieg and would happily vote for him, but the sad fact of the matter is that in this country, millions would still vote against him purely based on his sexual orientation.
Actually not. When Buttigieg was running in 2020 polls said 70% of voters said they would be comfortable voting for a gay man (not sure if they included lesbians in the question). The other 30% are Maga and hopeless. Even if the 70% included people lying because they don't want to be considered homophobes, there are enough open minded voters to get Buttigeg elected.
My only concern about Biden is age. But I have enough confidence in VP Harris to take the gamble. Plus, unlike TFG, Buden surrounds himself with smart, qualified people and values competence and integrity over loyalty. Furthermore! He has a. Loving marriage and I honestly think if he was starting to not do his job, Jill would tell him it was time to step aside.
I am a former independent turned Democrat and have always liked Biden. Yes, he has many gaffes but that is one thing that makes Joe, Joe. To me, he’s a good man and have trusted his judgement. That does not mean that I agree with everything he has done. IMO, most people will find things in a persons agenda that they disagree with, even if you vote for the person. I think that Biden was the right candidate, at the right time. We needed a calm, steady hand after the horror of the Trump years. However, I feel as though it’s time for a change, a generational change. We need younger blood in the White House and congress. Michelle Obama would be an excellent choice but she’s not interested, which is totally understandable after 8 years in the White House. I do like “mayor Pete” and think he could be a good candidate but don’t think that 2024 is his time. I am frightened of the fallout from another Biden/Trump match up.
In general we need younger leaders. For instance Nancy Pelosi has stepped back. It is time for Biden to do the same. I also think there is a effect where Biden is tied to Trump. Nobody wants to relive that horror. Mr. Biden has done a fine job, but it is time for younger leaders to have a shot.
I am a Democrat but it’s Biden’s age that I think is a major issue or may become one if he is re-elected. I would like to see any of the others you mentioned. Not a Harris fan and don’t think she would be elected.
Historical perspective? Not so unusual for incumbent to poll poorly. Early in the re-election cycle polling said Clinton, Reagan, Obama faced headwinds. They won re-election. H. W. Bush looked like he'd get 2nd term. But then he didn't.
Biden's fortunes are likely tied to whether Americans correctly perceive and interpret economic data to be in their favour. At the moment they do not. This is not to say Biden should run. But if he does, Biden & surrogates can correct misperceptions, can speak simply about the economic concerns (e.g. educate voters about avian flu affecting price of eggs & how government can develop a vaccine), have a lot of "town hall" and "listening tour" events in both rural and urban areas. Let voters see Biden and other Democratic, even Independent, representatives & senators often in the precincts. Talking on Sunday shows or a SOTU won't get the right messages out to people. Biden & others must get in front of voters, in-person to make sure voters know politicians hear their concerns. Politicians must offer offer tangible plans to right the ship, and ensure voters agree with the plans. One does not need a strong walking stride to accomplish big goals. Look at FDR or even Gov. Abbott. One must tell a plausible story that shows the politicians are in tune with the majority of real people, can win over skeptics, and can perform. Yes, win the TikTok voters. Newer isn't always better. Maybe the person who gets on a train, not a plane, could be the one taking the oath of office in 2025.
It is hilarious, reading the previous posts I must ask a simple question, "How much input, how much do you really believe Biden has been solely responsible for what has been done?"
Yes, certainly he will have presided over many meetings but most of the deliberative work has been done by others, committees & the like who provide the background for the decisions.
At this juncture, the whole Democratic theme is trashing the GOP model in place since Reagan, but that is something Joe Biden has been dreaming about for a long, long time. It is an inspiration that should not be wasted.
The only way I would want Biden to run is if he had a running mate like Pete who is both an excellent speaker and could handle Foreign Policy if Joe dies. We do not believe Kamala could handle the World Politics & Problems well. We are both Center leaning in domestic policies. IMHO Both the strength of the Bernie Publicity Machine to the Left plus Fox News and Bannon social media to the Right have done a real job of making people dissatisfied with Biden.
I’m kind of in the camp of not wanting Biden to run again mostly because if a different Dem is elected they have the potential for a second term. Also, ironically I’ll point out that second terms for presidents are often not so good and I believe Biden can justifiably take credit for a very successful 4 year term and ride into the sunset with Jill beside him in his ‘Vette.
The case for wanting to see him run is as a slap against ageism. I’m 66 and hopeful of aging nearly as well as Biden has. Despite the fact that the presidency is a killer job, many folks have pursued careers into their 90’s very successfully and I’m not so sure Biden couldn’t as well. He’s the Picasso or Pablo Casals of the presidency.
It is not that Democrats don't want Joe. The fact is we do want and need Joe but a Joe who is younger not someone who is in his mid eighties. I think Joe has done a good job but dropped the ball on the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the crisis at the border and finally the classified document scandal. The county is tired of bouncing from one scandal to the next. We suffered through 4 years of the worst scandals of the Trump Administration and began this Administration with Afghanistan. Enough is enough, we need new blood without the taint of a scandalous past.

Again, I really hope that you're right and that I'm wrong.
Sadly agree.
I’m not sure that’s really a factor. The same could be, and was, said about Obama’s being Black. You could be right. Just saying.
I want to be wrong about this, but the last seven plus years have really damaged my faith in this country.

I’m going with “Obama comp” as the primary factor, followed closely or tied with age. They are two halves of the same coin really.
