Donald Trump has been president — for a second time — for less than a week. But, there is already a quixotic effort to allow him to serve beyond 2028.
It comes in the form of a bill offered by Tennessee Republican Rep. Andy Ogles that would amend the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to TWO terms.
“He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” said Ogles in a press release announcing the move. “To that end, I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms. This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.”
To be clear: This is a publicity stunt — and is NOT happening.
Amending the Constitution is HARD. It requires a two-thirds vote in the House and Senate and THEN approval by three-quarters of the state legislatures in the country.
There is a zero percent chance that those high bars will be met by something like his. No way.
So, why is Ogles doing it? Two reasons:
To curry favor with Trump, who would absolutely LOVE to serve beyond 2028 if it was at all possible. “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we’ve got to figure something else out,’” Trump “joked” at a meeting with House Republicans a week after he won a 2nd term
To distract from the ongoing federal investigation into campaign finance charges related to Ogles’ 2022 campaign. At issue is a $320,000 personal loan Ogles made to himself during that race — a sum that local media says he did not have to give based on his financial records.
Again, this is NOT going to happen. But if Ogles is the first Republican to push for a Trump 3rd term, he certainly won’t be the last.
