At 12:40 am, Donald Trump was on Truth Social, offering congratulations to Patrick Mahomes and his wife on the birth of their third child:
Less than 6 hours later, he was back at it — attacking CBS and “60 Minutes”:
A few hours after that, he gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast.
He’ll give another one at the Washington Hilton around noon.
Then back to the White House to sign more executive orders.
It’s a remarkable pace for anyone — much less a 78 year old man. And it’s been like this from the second Trump was sworn in for his 2nd term 17 days ago.
He has signed 46 executive orders. He has spoken to the media — often at length — every single day. He has maintained a constant stream of Truth Social posts.
The question for me is: Can he possibly keep this up?
Trump is eight years older than he was last time he was in the White House. While he prides himself on how little sleep he needs, at some point the pace he is keeping seems likely to catch up to him.
Mistakes will be made when you operate at this pace — some of which we have already seen, most notably with the brief freeze on all federal loans and grants that caused chaos before being quickly rescinded.
I get why Trump is doing this. He views the presidency as a reality TV show. Every day is a new episode. And his goal is to get the highest ratings possible. And he believes the way to do that is to be everywhere all at once. (I don’t disagree.)
He is also making sure to drive the contrast between himself and the man he replaced in the White House. If Joe Biden was slow and steady — and largely stayed out of the public eye — Trump will be fast and constantly in front of the cameras.
From a purely political perspective, Trump’s be-everywhere strategy has worked for him. The news is flooded with stories about what he is saying and doing — leaving little room for any other storylines.
But, there’s a reason that even the best runners don’t sprint the entire marathon. It’s unsustainable. You eventually pay the bill for your early pace.
I think that’s where Trump is headed. But, again, when it comes to him all laws of political gravity seem to be suspended.
